Lueg viewpoint – spring trip to the Emmental

Almost two weeks ago, we ended up in the Emmental on one of the first beautiful spring days. I grew up in the Gürbetal – which is not far from the Emmental as the crow flies. But the odd hill in between and the star-shaped S-Bahn system facing Bern meant that our Emmental detours were limited to a few bike trips that can be counted on one hand. So we didn’t want to let the beautiful spring weather go to waste and combined the business meeting with a detour to Burgdorf. I’ve never been there before.

Visit to the Franz Gertsch Museum

The first stop in Burgdorf takes us to the Franz Gertsch Museum. Here, selected works by one of Switzerland’s most important contemporary artists are shown in a modern concrete building that is also worth seeing. His “Four Seasons Cycle” is particularly impressive. The four pictures are drawn in such detail that one gives the impression that one is looking at a photograph. After the museum tour, we fortify ourselves in the Artcafé right next to it and then walk through the pretty and – for me surprisingly large – old town of Burgdorf. The old town tour is signposted on information boards and offers some beautiful corners to discover.

View from the Lueg

Afterwards, we take the post bus to the “Lueg”. “There’s a nice view there,” I was advised on Twitter in advance. And “beautiful view” always appeals to me as an argument. The sporty alternative would be to hike the Lueg from Burgdorf or Huttwil. But even with the Postbus variant, the breather is required. We master the last meters of altitude to the viewpoint with cobbler’s horse. Unfortunately, the visibility is not quite as clear on this day and the Bernese Alps are hidden behind a layer of veil clouds. Nevertheless, the Lueg lives up to its name. We let our gaze wander over the still barren fields and forests of the Emmental and imagine how lush green the pastures will be in just a few weeks. If you take a picnic with you with an exciting book, you can also spend the whole afternoon up here.

The waiting time for the next post bus (only goes up to the Lueg by appointment) can be concluded on the terrace of the country inn of the same name. An all-round successful spring outing.
