Travel snapshot – hidden beauties
If you go on a city trip, you will have to make a selection of the sights to visit (unless you are in the same place for more than a week). You often have to choose between museums, buildings, churches and castles worth seeing, which are located in the center and are usually full of tourists, or those that are a bit remote and attract fewer people. The “Aqueduto das Águas Livres” is one of Lisbon’s landmarks, tucked away in the northwest district of Amoreiras.
From the São Sebastião and Rato metro stations, the beginning of the aqueduct is easily accessible on foot. Alternatively, take bus 758 from Cais do Sodre to the Campolide stop.
The aqueduct measures a total of 19 kilometers (with all branches even more than 50 kilometers), was built in the 18th century and contributed significantly to solving Lisbon’s water problem. Operations ceased in 1967.
The building can be visited and walked on today and is incredibly fascinating. Since we made the detour there in the evening, the aqueduct was already closed, but the view was still worth the walk.
How do you go about selecting the sights you want to see on a city trip? Meticulous preparation or spontaneous decisions?
