Brunch in Thun – Unfortunately awesome
Forgive me for this slightly vulgar title (although the roots of the word “horny” can be traced back to the 8th century), it wasn’t my idea. Bettina and Christian came up with the eggs on a trip through South Africa, where they were served incomparably good Egg Benedict in Durban. In the autumn of 2014, instead of always cooking for friends and acquaintances with their delicious “original”, they decided to expand the circle of happy ice cream lovers. And how do you do that if you don’t have your own restaurant? Exactly, you take over the scepter in other restaurants like a pop-up. The good start spurred her on to tour various restaurants in the Bernese area. I myself discovered the balls on my Twitter timeline. Because let’s be honest, with such a catchy name, you click on the link to find out what’s behind it. My curiosity was aroused and I signed up for the egg brunch in Thun. So I had a good reason to visit my favorite city.
Egg, egg, egg – eggs in the restaurant Dampfschiff Thun
In the meantime, the eggs have blossomed into a cult breakfast. The Dampfschiff restaurant in Thun is well stocked with local brunch lovers, but also with guests who have come all the way from Bern. Lukas Marti and Simon Burkhalter – two young, innovative hosts from the Gürbetal, who usually hold the wooden spoon in the steamboat firmly in their hands, handed it over to Bettina and Christian this morning. The restaurant itself is idyllically located directly on the banks of the Aare, a five-minute walk from Thun train station. The historic “Ländtehaus” was built in 1805 and received an award in 2003 for the successful renovation and revival of the restaurant. The small, cosy rooms exude a wonderfully homely ambience. Perfect for kicking off the weekend with an extensive brunch with friends.
There are three menus to choose from on the menu: Original, Fjord and Boef. Depending on the number of eggs (between one and three), the price varies from 18 CHF to 25 CHF. We opted for Original (with bacon, Béarnaise sauce and Belper tuber) and Boef (beef tartare, capers and Belper tuber). The products used are all locally sourced. If you’re a little hungry, I recommend ordering at least two eggs. Or if you prefer a variety of dishes, you can order two different ones, each with an egg. In any case, a convincingly good breakfast that stands out from the rest of the brunch offer. At least I have never gotten such deliciously prepared Egg Benedict anywhere.
The current egg tour is already coming to an end. The last date of Easter Saturday (at Apfelgold Bern) is already fully booked. But keep your eyes open, because I’m convinced that Thun will soon be blessed with balls again.
Sunday Brunch Thun
Update spring 2017 – the eggs are back and bring breakfast happiness to Thun on the following dates:
February 18th and April 14th: Eggs Events
Photo walk through Bonstettenpark
We seized the opportunity and went for a digestive walk in Bonstettenpark in Gwatt after breakfast. The popular local recreation area is located directly on Lake Thun. Walking paths lead through a nature reserve, where there is a lot to discover year in, year out. We wanted to test our new photo equipment on the walk. Many of you have asked us if we shoot with filters. So far, I have always answered this question in the negative. Last week, however, we treated ourselves to a filter set consisting of graduated filters, neutral density filters and polarizing filters – after all, you’re supposed to be constantly evolving. Extensive testing will then take place over Easter in Mallorca. However, the first tests are already showing interesting results.
