Winter magic à la Lenzerheide

In times when the snow is a long time coming and people complain about the constant increase in ski pass prices, alternatives are in demand. And what I don’t consider an alternative is to flee to the south. All in all, this is insignificantly cheaper than spending the winter in our latitudes and coming to terms with the weather. Fortunately, many ski resorts have now understood that there is a need for off-piste offers and have invested in the expansion of the marked winter hiking trails, among other things. We discovered the charm of winter hiking and snowshoeing last season. Away from the Halligalli on and off the slopes, trudging lonely step by step through a snow-covered fairytale landscape is wonderfully decelerating.

The Lenzerheide holiday region, for example, has more than 80 kilometres of groomed winter hiking trails on offer. And that’s not counting the snowshoe routes. Last year we spent a weekend in Lenzerheide and explored an easy snowshoe route. The route leads from the village centre of Lenzerheide to the valley station of the Tgantieni lift. From there, the hiking trail is signposted with pink markings and leads along the edge of the forest up to the hamlet of Sporz at 1,600 m above sea level. If it hasn’t just snowed, this route is easily doable without snowshoes (we were on the road without snowshoes). The panorama includes a beautiful view of the Lenzerheide and the Parpaner Rothorn opposite. For the round trip (5 km) you have to calculate about two hours. But don’t hesitate to take a little more time, because in Sporz you will find the wonderful mountain hut hotel Guarda Val with an inviting sun terrace. Put on your sunglasses, order a hot chocolate and let your gaze wander into the snow-covered Albula Valley.

Of course, Lenzerheide also offers countless kilometres of slopes, for those who are looking for happiness on the slopes in between. Since the Urdenbahn was put into operation in January 2014, winter visitors can now even hop back and forth between Arosa and Lenzerheide. You can find my impressions from last year here, the day ticket costs 69 CHF for adults this season, young people up to 17 years pay 46 CHF.
