40 years and not the least bit tired
1973
- the year when my parents didn’t even know that I would exist one day
- the year the ATM was patented (ah yes?!)
- the year in which the first major oil crisis began
and the year in which the first two Mövenpick hotels were opened, one at Zurich Airport and one in Regensdorf. 40 years have passed since then, and Mövenpick is celebrating this anniversary with us. Great, isn’t it?
Until May 21st there is an anniversary menu, where the most popular menus of yesteryear are served at attractive prices and we were allowed to eat our way through this menu last night.
We started the culinary journey through time with half a portion of Scottish smoked salmon with horseradish foam (11.90 CHF) and a shrimp cocktail Rose Island (9.90 CHF). Both tasted great to us. When it came to the drink, however, I stuck with the tried and tested Ice-Tea out of sheer overwhelm. To the experts among you (and for next time) – what was THE cult drink in the 70s?
For the main course, we followed the chef’s recommendations and chose the Emince de veau Zurichoise, or in good German: Zürcher Geschnetzeltes (21.90 CHF) and once the Brochette Easy Rider (20.90 CHF). Looking at the menu, I got the feeling that it was fashionable to name the dishes after an English-French language jumble. But as I said, this is pure conjecture.
The main course was also excellent – the hash browns crispy and the meat juicy – and let’s be honest, where around Zurich can you get a decent portion of meat for under 30 CHF? Level.
Although already quite full, we had to take a look at the dessert menu. The anniversary menu also includes three dessert recommendations – Bircher muesli, Tête à Tête (nine (!) mixed scoops of Mövenpick Ice Cream with fruit salad and whipped cream) and apple pie. Since I love Mövenpick Ice Cream, it quickly became clear to me that I wanted to try an ice cream creation. When we got the ordered portions, I was almost blown. I really didn’t expect so much ice cream and whipped cream – wow, Mövenpick definitely knows how to make those with a sweet tooth happy! True to the motto of founder Ueli Pranger:
“We don’t do anything out of the ordinary. We are only successful because we do ordinary things in an extraordinary way.”
My recommendation, if you like good food, a touch of nostalgia and unbeatable prices, you should definitely take a look at the Mövenpick Hotel Zurich-Airport or Regensdorf by 21 May. No one has to :) home hungry.
Note: I have been invited by Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts to try out the anniversary menu – thank you very much. Nevertheless, my readers can be sure that I always represent my views and enthusiasm here.
