Caribbean feeling in Tortola
On the third day of the cruise, we headed for Roadtown on Tortola, the main island of the British Virgin Islands. The drive between the archipelagos in the early morning was absolutely fantastic. I will never forget a wonderful sunrise and the view of the different bays.
In Roadtown there is a deep-sea port where two ships can dock. The town is very sleepy and apart from a few small shops there is not much to see there. We signed up here for an island tour in an open jeep. The driver and our guide appeared on time. The trip takes you around the western half of the island in one afternoon, including a one-hour stop at Cane Garden Bay on the beach.
At first, the tour went uphill, as Tortola is mountainous. The incredibly narrow and steep roads are absolutely breakneck and I was very happy that I didn’t have to drive it myself. From the top of the hill you had a wonderful view of the harbour in Roadtown on the one hand and over the island and the adjacent islands on the other. For this view alone, I found the tour absolutely worth it.
The tour then continued past a wall painted with rural motifs that gives an overview of the local culture. The next item on the agenda was a stay at the beach.
Finally, we drove along the coastal road (Sir Francis Drake Highway) through various villages with larger and smaller marinas back to Roadtown. I really liked Tortola. Since there are still some beautiful corners to discover on the other islands of the British Virgin Islands, it is not impossible that I will return here again.
