Creative and fun Instagram hashtags

At the beginning of the week I stumbled across an interesting post that introduces the top 20 Instagram influencer hashtags. The post inspired me to share a selection of my favorite creative hashtags. But first, two or three words about hashtag usage. For a while, I tagged my pictures with a whole list of hashtags. In the meantime, I have reduced this a lot and try to use few, targeted hashtags (such as the location, the local “igers” tag and groups like #igTravelThursday). My recommendation:

  • Don’t use random tags like #justinbieber and #drunk (and yes, I keep seeing landscape images with these tags)
  • Make the tags (which are only indirectly related to the image) into a separate comment – for example, they are not visible in the automated tweet
  • Use relevant hashtags such as #passionpassport or #welltravelled
  • or better yet, create your own creative hashtag
  • Of course, a hashtag can also be funny!

And these hashtags inspire me:

#fromwhereIstand

Sunday morning at the flower market in Ghent – but the foot queen is Jana from Sonne & Wolken – she has already dedicated two posts to the hashtag.

#chasingfog

Actually, it’s more likely to be in autumn, but with the current weather conditions it’s also quite doable. This picture was taken a few weeks ago in the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

#chasinglight

One of my absolute favorite pictures – taken on the way to the Gurnigel

#greenhannes

The hashtag was created by Hannes Becker because of his love for green landscapes. I also like to use it when green colors dominate my picture.

Lush green in Appenzellerland!

#LetsGoSomewhere

…. over seven bridges and much further

#calmversation

The wonderful Missy Jena is also Miss #calmversation. Your feed is like a fairytale landscape.

and my variant:

#tinyPeopleinbigPlaces

One of my favorite hashtags, because sometimes the perspectives and dimensions of a landscape only become really tangible with people as a reference. For example, in the Trümmelbach Falls. Imagine the two little people away – would the picture still have the same effect?

#caughtgramming

True to the motto “I see what you see”. We experimented a bit last week and that’s how the cover picture of the post came about. Depending on the lighting conditions, however, it is not so easy to capture the image on the display correctly.

#campvibes

Because there’s a little bit of adventurous spirit in all of us

#notmynonni

Nonni-lover @tianapix came up with this touching and incredibly funny hashtag.

and this is my Nonni version:

#exploreSwitzerland

On the exploreSwitzerland account, creative and inspiring pictures of Switzerland from various Instagrammers are shown. The account is hosted by the Instagram dream team @nicolehunziker, @corigold, and @kitkat_ch.

By the way, at the moment #exploreSwitzerland looks like this:

explore_Switzerland

#chasing_mountain_lakes

This is my very personal hashtag, where I collect my mountain lakes. But of course, I’m also happy when I see that the hashtag is used by other Instagrammers and that a very nice mountain lake gallery is created.

Update 2018

I wrote this post in 2014. It’s been four years since then, and Instagram hasn’t necessarily developed in a positive way, in my opinion. For me, a lot of things on the platform have mutated into a monotony… unfortunately. Creative content? Not at all. Today, the primary focus of a successful Instagram account is no longer on hashtags, but on the relevance of the individual posts. To stay up to date, I recommend reading this article: current top hashtags on Instagram
