The Kranzbach – what makes the Bavarian castle hotel unique

It has become a tradition that year after year we choose the spookiest November weekend for a nice, relaxing wellness weekend. This is the only way to “immobilize” an active bundle like mine for two days and consciously shift down a gear. This time the trip took us to the area of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Not far from the well-known holiday resort there is a hotel that is unique both in its architectural appearance and with its idyllic location with a view of Germany’s highest mountain – the Zugspitze.

Das fabelhafte Mary Portman House

It’s no secret that I like historic hotels with patina. What’s more, the history of Das Kranzbach corresponds exactly to my “prey scheme”. The special appearance of the main building can be attributed to the British client and musician Mary Isabel Portman. In 1913 – at the age of 36 – she signed the purchase contract for the Kranzbachwiese and hired the English architects Detmar Blow and Fernand Billerey to build a “country house” in the style of the “Arts and Crafts” movement. Due to the outbreak of the First World War, Mary Portman never had time to furnish the completed house hospitably for her artist friends. After the Evangelical Church of Dortmund operated the house for a long time as a holiday resort for young people from the Ruhr area, the sale of the complex and an associated architectural reorientation led to the current appearance of the hotel complex. Today, the Kranzbach consists of the historic part of the castle – the Mary Portman House – and a modern extension that is carefully integrated into the landscape, which is not noticeable at first glance. But what captivates me immediately after entering the Mary Portman House, where the reception is located, is the grandiose interior design. It bears the signature of British interior designer Ilse Crawford. Simply «wow!» The oversized armchairs, the fluffy sitting areas, the casual bar and the flickering log fires… Ingenious. And interestingly, this part of the hotel seemed to us to be somehow always “empty” despite excellent occupancy (and quite a few rooms). Of course, every now and then someone sat in one of the armchairs, but we always found a cozy spot in front of one of the fireplaces without any problems.

The perfect day at Das Kranzbach

When it comes to hotel rooms, you can choose between room types in the Mary Portman House and room types in the modern Garden Wing. And as a special extra, there is the possibility to spend the night away from the hotel in the Kranzbach tree house. We are accommodated in a double room in the garden wing, which convinces with a spacious floor plan, lots of homely wood and a view of the countryside. The furnishings are kept simple and focus on details, such as the fact that the contents of the minibar are included in the room rate. These refinements, with which Das Kranzbach stands out from other establishments, are consistently permeated throughout the guest experience. For example, there is a specially equipped juice bar at the breakfast buffet, where you can mix your own smoothies and other healthy breakfast drinks directly from the provided selection of fruits and vegetables. Another highlight is the in-house bakery, which conjures up an almost unbelievably diverse selection of rolls on the buffet every morning.

Relaxen im Badehaus

Das Kranzbach hat sich als Wellnesshotel einen Namen gemacht und somit zieht das attraktive Badehaus auch viele Gäste an. Wer die Pools, Saunen und Dampfbäder für sich alleine geniessen möchte, der steht zeitig auf, frühstückt gemütlich und frönt für den Rest des Vormittags das Nichtstun im Badehaus. Erst so gegen den frühen Nachmittag hin füllt sich das Badehaus mit den übrigen Hotelgästen. Wir fanden insbesondere an den verschiedenen beheizten Aussenpools gefallen. Mein Favorit ist das diesen Sommer neu eröffnete Onsen, wo die Wassertemperatur nach Vorbild japanischer Heisswasserpools konstant bei 40 °C liegt. Herrlich entspannend!

Waldluft inhalieren

Während sich das Badehaus nach dem Mittag langsam mit Hotelgästen füllt, begeben wir uns «antizyklisch» nach draussen. Das Kranzbach bietet seinen Gästen ein umfangreiches Aktivprogramm, das auch geführte Wanderungen beinhaltet. Wäre das Wetter nicht gar so trüb gewesen, dann hätten wir an der Kultur-Wanderung Mittenwald teilgenommen. So aber entscheiden wir uns für die kurze «Frischluftrunde» auf dem Kranzbach Waldlauf.

Living the good life…

Im Pool plantschen und einmal tief frische Waldluft ein- und ausatmen, macht bekanntlich hungrig. Da kommt es gelegen, dass mittags ein leichter Lunch und nachmittags das Strudelbuffet mit hausgemachten Kuchen zur Stärkung bereitsteht. Das Buffet wird sowohl im Bistrot im Badehaus als auch in der Kräutergartenlobby im Hauptgebäude aufgetischt. Den Rest des Nachmittags verbringen wir im «Games Room». Ich bin eigentlich absolut kein Fan von Brettspielen (oder Gesellschaftsspielen generell) – aber der Games Room im Kranzbach ist so wunderbar einladend gestaltet, dass ich richtiggehend Lust auf eine Runde «Eile mit Weile» bekam.

Man hätte uns an diesem Nachmittag filmen müssen. Der Freund und ich hatten ein riesen Gaudi im Games Room. Abgerundet wird ein Tag im Das Kranzbach mit einem 4-gängigen Wahlmenü mit zusätzlichem Salat- und Käsebuffet. Ihr seht, man kann es sich hier so richtig gut gehen lassen (und plant am besten zwei, drei Stunden Sport mit ein, damit man nicht zusätzliche Kilos nach Hause schleppt)
