Lausanne serves up
This summer, for the fifth time, Lausanne is organising the “Lausanne à table” culinary event series. From farm visits to beer celebrations and chocolate tastings, gourmets around Lausanne can really indulge themselves from April to October. We got a taste of the event series last autumn at the Zurich guest performance at Château Rochefort and were thrilled. Last Thursday we were able to take part in the legendary “Grande Table des Lausannois” and feasted our way through a magnificent summer evening.
The Grande Table des Lausannois
The backdrop for this year’s edition of the “Grande Table” was the Mon-Repos swimming pool in the heart of Lausanne. The warm rays of sunshine had warmed up the indoor pool and the brief glance inside confirmed the suspicion that this would be a hot evening. But for the time being, everyone looked for a cozy spot on the lawn in front of it, equipped themselves with beer from the Brasserie artisanale du Jorat, Chasselas and Côté Rosé from Vins du Lausanne or with “Gin du pays” and toasted their friends. All around people seemed to know each other, stood together in small groups and enjoyed the wonderful summer evening.
My stomach was growling after a long day at work and after the drive from Zurich to Lausanne and could hardly wait until the first appetizers were finally distributed. The six catering organisers and restaurants were already busy producing. My growling stomach was soon soothed! The appetizers were a real hit. My favorite: Chip soufflé with black curry and veal tartare. And the lamb skewers were so popular that not a single one made it to our table. We had found Heddi from Cuisine Helvetica in the hustle and bustle.
The first and second courses of the menu (beef broth with garden vegetables and a piece of grey cattle beef as well as a “papillote” with char and cream cheese) were also served outside in the sun.
The shrill sound of the whistle silenced the cheerful chatter and guided the guests into the swimming pool in the manner of a pool attendant. The sultry climate at the bottom of the swimming pool was fought by some jokers with water pistols. This was followed by finely stuffed conchiglioni, followed by duck on chanterelles and cherry tomatoes in a cocotte. This walk elicited an “uff” from me. While I still had insatiable cravings during the aperitif, I had now slowly but surely reached the level of satiety. For the cheese slices and the extremely refreshing popsicles, the appetite was just enough. The sweets, which were served with coffee at the end, I left to others.
Centrally accommodated
Luckily, we didn’t have to go straight back to Zurich, but were able to sink into the wonderfully soft bed at the Lausanne Palace & Spa after a five-minute walk. The traditional hotel is located in a prime location in the middle of Lausanne, near the Lausanne Flon metro station, and offers a magnificent view over the city and Lake Geneva. We really enjoyed the hotel the next morning, where we feasted our way through the breakfast buffet as if we hadn’t eaten anything for a long time. What I personally like most about Lausanne Palace & Spa is its openness to the city of Lausanne. The brasserie, the LP’s Bar and the sushi restaurant face the street and the cosy lobby area is also accessible to non-hotel guests at all times and is extremely popular with the elderly population of Lausanne as a coffee meeting place or informal meeting location. If you are looking for centrally located accommodation in Lausanne and would like to treat yourself to the luxury of a 5-star hotel, the Lausanne Palace is a good choice.

I’m a Friday kid from the very beginning and have been marching around with a blue and white Friday bag since secondary school days (yes, that was ages ago). When Freitag recently asked me if I would like to be on the road with their F512 VOYAGER Weekender in the future, I couldn’t resist for two reasons:
a) I need a new weekender
anyway b) the individual Friday bag unique pieces are just cool
If you also find the bag casual and are planning your summer road trip with light luggage, then I have good news. You can choose a Voayger as part of Friday’s summer promotion and borrow it free of charge for up to 3 weeks. You can find the information here.
My new travel companion was ceremoniously inaugurated on the trip to Lausanne. I am pleasantly surprised by the size and layout of the outer compartments (although I doubt that it will pass as hand luggage when fully filled, but we will test that on the next city trip). In addition, it can be carried like a backpack.
Please note: I have been invited by Lausanne Tourisme to participate in this event. The overnight stay was kindly supported by the Lausanne Palace & Spa.
