Do you have any favourite places? Places that you have touched on your travels and that have conquered a place in your heart despite their short stay?

Bregaglia got hold of such a place with me two years ago, just at the moment when the view towards Soglio opened up for us on the high trail coming from Tubladel. For Segantini, it was the “threshold to paradise”. For me, it’s simply a magical place. This year we went up to Soglio for lunch on our road trip over the Flüela, Maloja and Splügen passes. On the last visit, there was no time left to pay a visit to the legendary Palazzo Salis in Soglio. In its secluded garden, which is inconspicuously hidden behind the old building in the village centre, you can dine excellently.

In addition to the culinary detour, this time we took enough time to explore the rest of the villages of the valley. My favourite is the extremely pretty Promontogno with the idyllic stone bridge over the bubbling Maira.

The charm of the authentic cultural landscape with its interspersed picturesque settlements did not go unnoticed by the Swiss Heritage Society. This year, Bregaglia will be honoured with the award of the Wakker Prize 2015 for its prudent approach to building culture and the will to preserve and promote its own identity.

Are you looking for excursion ideas for the weekend? Take a seat on the post bus and let yourself be driven down the Maloja Pass via the hairpin bends. A day in Bregaglia to clear your head is like a week’s wellness holiday. Warranted.
