5 perfect spring destinations in Europe
I’m taking the official start of spring as an opportunity to get out of winter mode and inspire you with five great destinations for spring. Although, it won’t be completely snow-free here for the time being, because there is still one last adventure in the snow to do. After that, however, it’s finally over and we hopefully start the ice-free season with a trip to the Balearic Islands. If you, dear readers, have any tips of all kinds about Mallorca and/or Menorca – let me know!
And if you are still looking for travel ideas for the many upcoming holidays, then I can recommend the following five destinations. Away from the often cited European capitals, there are still countless pretty towns and villages to discover.
Ghent
On Sunday, stroll through the flower market to the beat of marching music, eat a waffle at the Graslei or turn back time imaginarily in one of the beautiful beguinages. The Belgian city of Ghent is simply wonderfully relaxed and the perfect starting point to discover Flanders. From Ghent to the tourist magnet Bruges it takes just under an hour by train and you can also reach the fashion city of Antwerp in two hours. Incidentally, Ghent is particularly beautiful in the evening hours, when the sophisticated lighting concept unfolds its full power shortly after Blue Hour and lets the magnificent facades shine golden.
Tuscany
Although I thought Florence was a bit of a disaster at first, after some wandering through the crowds, I finally found Florence away from the tourist spots. For example, in Piazza Santo Spirito, where the locals meet for a chat on balmy evenings. Nevertheless, I only found the special charm of Tuscany in Siena and the hills of the Chianti region. The perfect spring weekend getaway to soak up the Italian sun.
Ljubljana
Ljubljana is young, fresh and cheerful. The capital of Slovenia is actually not that far away and yet it has not really slipped onto the travel radar yet. The special flair of Ljubljana can be experienced, for example, while strolling along the shabby-chic Trubarjeva Cesta. No street is more colourful and quirky. Instead of normal street lamps, colourful umbrellas illuminate the neighbourhood and shoes hang in the air all over the street. The company is also innovative in its culinary arts. For example, there is a former watch salesman who now offers the famous Carniolan sausage in fast food style, or the chef Andrej, who has fulfilled a dream with his bread boutique shop. Ljubljana is a small city and if you have more than two days, you can plan a day trip to Lake Bled, for example.
Comersee
I still firmly believe that Varenna is the most beautiful place on Lake Como. We discovered this pretty spot last year more by chance and I was blown away by the colorful houses that nestle smoothly against the steeply rising rock face. Varenna is also conveniently located to visit the other pretty villages along Lake Como by ferry. Gelati and dolcefarniente – two powerful arguments for a weekend of idleness in Varenna.
Regensburg
Regensburg is deservedly a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The capital of the district of Upper Palatinate on the Danube attracts visitors with a car-free old town centre crisscrossed with charming alleys. Those interested in culture will find an abundance of exciting sights and museums. On Neupfarrplatz, for example, almost three centuries of city history can be admired, which are layered on top of each other. On a balmy spring evening, the young people meet on the Jahn Island, dangle their legs over the Danube and toast each other with a “Spital Maibock”, brewed directly in the St. Katharinenspital behind it
Where are you going in the next few months? Are there exciting trips on the program and do you also have tips for great spring destinations?
My trips to Regensburg and Ghent were supported – thank you very much for this! As always, my readers can be sure that I always represent my views and enthusiasm.
