Alpine chic at the Cervo Mountain Boutique Resort

Last winter, after our snowshoe odyssey from Zermatt to the Sunnegga and back, after what felt like seven hours of trudging through the snow, we passed the Cervo. It was already après-ski time and the bar in front of the hotel was packed. Unfortunately, we didn’t know at the time that there was a lift leading down to the Sunnegga valley station right in front of the hotel. Despite its length of slope, bordering the forest and with a view of the Matterhorn, the Cervo is only about 10 minutes (on foot) from Zermatt train station.

Last weekend we were allowed to spend a night at the Mountain Boutique Resort, which is one of the Design Hotels. Last year, Cervo was awarded the Travellers’ Choice Award by Tripadvisor and is ranked 10th in Europe as the best hotel in Switzerland. It seems as if the guests at the Cervo feel completely at ease.

We will be picked up at Zermatt train station by Cervo with an electric car. Zermatt is “car-free”. Personally, I don’t really like all the electric cars driving around either… The resort is divided into different chalets, with the lobby, restaurant and bar located in an older building. The chalets, with a total of around 35 rooms, were rebuilt in stages. Overall, the resort presents itself in a harmonious ensemble, as emphasis was also placed on the use of natural materials in the new buildings. Especially in the main house, an interesting mix of “alpine chalet meets hunting lodge” has been created. The rustic, modern style is consistently carried through, alpine chic. I like it.

Our Deluxe Room is located on the top floor of chalet no. 3. The room is surprisingly bright and spacious. The white-painted wooden beams contribute significantly to this. In any case, wood is the dominant material in the room – floor, bed, furniture – quality to feel good. I think it’s great that the beam construction is visible and no continuous walls are used. We feel at home in the mountains in the light-flooded attic room from the very first moment. The only drop of melancholy is that we can only guess at the Matterhorn from our room balcony. Some mighty fir trees block our direct view.

By the way, each of the chalets has its own small wellness area in the basement with sauna, sanarium, bucket shower, outdoor whirlpool and relaxation room. So every guest can relax in peace after a day in the mountains.

We feel slightly hungry after our trip to the Riffelsee and make ourselves comfortable for an aperitif in the bar. The attention to design detail is remarkable. The Cervo logo, for example, is even on the “Apéro-Bite-Picker” (I don’t have the correct term here… ;)).

Afterwards we can take off for a culinary flight of fancy in the cozy restaurant. The hunting season has just started and so we decide to enjoy a regional game. The cuisine is truly outstanding and our main courses – chamois and wild boar – melt in your mouth.

Satisfied and full, we snuggle up in our comfortable bed and dream of the impressive mountains around Zermatt.

The next morning starts early, as we have planned a promising hike. The Matterhorn welcomes us in full sunny glory. This can only be a magnificent day! First of all, however, we taste breakfast. The beautifully prepared breakfast buffet of the Cervo offers everything my morning heart desires. In front of the window, the hiking board already beckons you to a new mountain adventure. The resort offers not only the winter holidaymaker an ideal starting point (with the skis you can practically ski right up to the hotel door). Summer guests will also find numerous hiking trails in all directions right next to the Cervo.

The Cervo offers a stylish and unique mountain stay in the middle of Zermatt, which I thoroughly enjoyed and can recommend.

Note: My visit to Zermatt was supported by the Cervo Mountain Boutique Resort – thank you very much for this. As always, my readers can be sure that I always represent my views and enthusiasm here.
