Bern in summer – the most beautiful places
Last week, in the best late summer weather, I visited Bern and decided to leave the usual program aside to fully enjoy the great weather. I have now put together my 4 “summer places” in the city of Bern and hope to inspire you. The best thing about it: all places are only a maximum of 15-20 minutes walk from the main train station. So you don’t have to take on sweaty walks.
1. Marzili – Outdoor swimming pool on the Aare
The Marzili is located below the Parliament Building, directly on the Aare. The bathroom is within walking distance. If you want it a little more comfortable, you can also use the funicular or bus no. 30. The outdoor swimming pool has a 50 m swimming pool, two 25 m fun pools and a diving pool. But the really great and refreshing thing is swimming in the Aare. To do this, you walk a little upstream and then drift back to Marzili. This cooling off in the Marzili is, believe it or not, absolutely free. I think it’s really great that there is an outdoor swimming pool in the city of Bern that offers so much and costs nothing for the user. The Marzili outdoor pool is open daily from 08:30 to 19:00 from May to September.
2. Bundesplatz and the water feature
Since the redesign, there has been a water feature on the Bundesplatz, which attracts especially the children in summer (don’t forget to take spare clothes with you). If you need to cool off between shopping or sightseeing, this is the place to be.
The water feature on the Bundesplatz is open every day, in summer from 10:00 to 22:00 and in winter from 10:00 to 18:00.
3. Bärenplatz
On the Bärenplatz, right next to the Bundesplatz, there are a variety of restaurants with delicious ice cream creations. These can’t quite keep up with an Italian gelateria, but they still provide cooling.
4. Big Ski Jump
From 26 July to 26 August, the OrangeCinema with a wide range of films will be located on the Große Schwanze, which can be reached directly from the main station by lift. The view from the Grosse Schwanze over the rooftops of Bern to the Alps is simply gigantic when the weather is nice. We watched “Charlie Chaplin – City Lights”. The silent film was orchestrated live by the Basel Symphony Orchestra and was insanely great. What could be better than ending a sunny late summer evening in the open-air cinema, lying on a deck chair, with free Ovaltine Crunchy Ice?
