Varenna – der schönste Ort am Comer See

Sometimes you have to have pork. Actually, I was “only” looking for a cheap accommodation on the train route from Milan to Tirano. It was supposed to be the second last stop on our Austria-Slovenia-Italy-Switzerland train journey.

Stop in Varenna

At first I thought there was no train at all. Until, thanks to Rome2Rio, I realized that I don’t have to look for train connections on the Trenitalia side, but on the Trenord side. However, the selection of possible places to stay was quickly narrowed down. Only four of the serviced stops – Lecco, Varenna-Esino, Bellano and Colico – are located directly on Lake Como. I then decided to book an accommodation in Varenna-Esino (because, about halfway between Milan and Tirano) and found what I was looking for in the Albergo del Sole (partner link), guesthouse and pizzeria in the center of Varenna. The guesthouse still had a double room on offer for 140 euros – almost a bargain from Easter Saturday to Easter Sunday on Lake Como.

With this spontaneous and admittedly poorly researched decision, I unknowingly backed the right horse. Varenna is not just any place on Lake Como – but probably the most beautiful and cutest village around the whole lake. The colourful houses nestle against the green mountainside and narrow, steep streets cross the village towards the lake. There is a lively atmosphere around the village square and on the waterfront. Away from these hotspots, the quiet, medieval atmosphere dominates. Gorgeous, just my taste!

Boat trip to other beautiful places on Lake Como

From Varenna there are regular ferry connections to Menaggio and Bellagio. We spontaneously decide to go to Bellagio for a gelato. The reason for this, however, is not so much the gelato but the fantastic view of Varenna, which is best enjoyed from the ferry. Bellagio itself is located between the two arms of the lakes “Lecco” and “Como” and is the number 1 main attraction on Lake Como, especially among the rich and famous. This is probably also the best chance to meet George Clooney spontaneously. However, we didn’t succeed in “celebrity watching” that day, but we found the best gelateria in Bellagio right away (it is located conspicuously opposite the ferry pier).

Aperitif on the lakeside promenade of Lake Como

Back in Varenna, we enjoy a stylish aperitif right on the waterfront before the pizza feast at Albergo del Sole.

Hike to the Castello di Vezio

The next morning we start punctually with the sunrise for a morning hike to the Castello di Vezio directly above the Varenna. The approximately 30-minute hike leads along a narrow path along the steep slope, is reasonably well signposted and offers unique views over Lake Como and the compact core of Varenna. From the castle itself (4 euros entrance fee for adults) you can even look directly onto the village square of Varenna. A worthwhile excursion in the area.

Most beautiful place on Lake Como

Coincidentally or not, it was worth making a stop in Varenna. Nevertheless, much too short intermezzo, the village with its medieval charm has me wrapped around my finger. This is the most beautiful place on Lake Como (no mistake).
