Short Cherry Blossom Hike from Zug to Walchwil

The hike from Zug to Walchwil is an especially rewarding outing for cherry blossom fans in spring. Between March and April, blooming cherry trees line the trail, while beautiful views over Lake Zug toward Mount Rigi keep opening up along the way. Since the route feels more like a leisurely walk for long stretches, it can be enjoyed at a very relaxed pace. Perfect for anyone who is not looking to rack up as many steep elevation gains as possible, but simply wants to enjoy nature in spring. At the end of the route, there is also a particularly worthwhile dining tip waiting for foodies.

Starting the hike in Zug’s charming old town

We had actually been hoping for sunny spring weather for this outing. Instead, the sky was overcast. But since we had already reserved a table at the restaurant at the end of the hike a few days earlier and I was looking forward to the delicious spring menu, we set off anyway. Once again, it turned out to be a great decision. Before long, we realized that this easy hike has its own charm even without postcard-perfect weather.

The hike from Zug to Walchwil starts right at Zug train station. From there, the signs lead along Alpenstrasse to Vorstadtquai. The following section via Fischmarkt and Untere Altstadt is especially charming. Here, the hiking trail passes directly by Zug’s most famous landmark: the 52-meter-high Zytturm, which was once part of the city wall. I actually think that the alleyways of Zug’s old town are almost even more appealing in rainy weather than in sunshine.

Just as we leave the old town streets behind, the light drizzle stops as well. It almost seems as though the first tentative rays of sunshine are already pushing through the clouds. We follow traffic-calmed side streets through residential neighborhoods to the edge of the city of Zug. Before long, we spot the first blooming cherry trees. We did this hike last spring in mid-April, so already toward the end of the blossom season. That makes the sight of the white blossoms all the more delightful. The view of Lake Zug and the mountain peaks of Central Switzerland is wonderful too.

Most of the route runs along paved lanes or compacted forest paths and can also be managed with a stroller for long stretches. However, the hike is not entirely barrier-free. Shortly before Walchwil, a narrow path that takes us from one side of the ravine carved out by the Lotenbach stream to the other makes it clear that this can rightfully still be called a «hike» rather than just a walk. Most of the cherry trees are either found in the first section between Meisenberg and Oberwil or in the following stretch between Untertal and Rägeten.

Shortly before Walchwil Oberdorf, we had one more unexpected encounter. Someone coming toward us recognized me and greeted me with the words: «Aren’t you Travelita?» Apparently, Travelita readers come up with similar outing ideas even entirely independently of the blog tips. In any case, I was very happy about the encounter. Who knows, maybe our paths will cross again on another route someday.

A dining tip for a delightful finish

And I also benefit from your tips again and again. The destination of this tour and, if we are being honest, the actual inspiration for this cherry blossom hike were recommended to me by someone from the Travelita community. Sternen Walchwil is located right next to the boat dock on the shore of Lake Zug and, in nice weather, scores points with its lakeside terrace directly by the water. But the cozy dining rooms inside the historic building are also very inviting.

Sternen is a family-run business. After training with, among others, Tanja Grandits in Basel, Noémie Bernard took over the role of head chef from her father Giorgio Bernard a few years ago. During the week, in my opinion, there is a very reasonably priced business lunch menu considering the quality of the products, with a choice of two to seven courses. On Sundays, a special Sunday menu is served at lunchtime. Very fitting for the season, we enjoyed an all-around perfect asparagus risotto.
