Doing nothing in Thun is the best
For all those who don’t know Thun – the city is the gateway to the Bernese Oberland and is located halfway from Bern to Interlaken. But I still haven’t quite understood why the majority of tourists in Thun only drive through to visit Interlaken. I think Thun is a bit more charming than Interlaken and it’s worth planning a stop here.
Start with a latte and a walk
In summer, for example, you can start the day at the AEK Caffé, which is located directly on the Aare. A latte, a brioche and relax and enjoy the view from the wonderful lounge chairs. Is there anything better? Afterwards, I recommend the Thun-Schadau riverside path, which starts at the landing stage at the train station and leads to the Schadaupark. Years of planning and negotiations were required for this riverside path, but now it is actually a reality. After about a kilometre, you will pass the historic Scherzligkirche and then stand in front of the entrance to the beautiful Schadaupark. Schadau Park is home to Schadau Castle, which was built in the 19th century and is one of the most beautiful castles in Switzerland. Today it houses a gastronomy museum and the Arts restaurant. The park offers walking paths, a miniature steam train, sunbathing lawns and a fantastic alpine panorama. In summer you can also swim in the lake. It is, so to speak, the free alternative to the Thun lido, which is located right next to it.
Swimming at the lido in Thun
The Thun lido is, at least according to the media, the largest and most beautiful lido in Switzerland. I also think the lido itself is really great. It has huge sunbathing areas, a 50 and 25 m swimming pool, a fun pool including a slide, a children’s pool, a playground and beach volleyball courts. Adults have to pay 6 CHF admission, there are reduced prices for children, apprentices and students.
In the evening, the whole of Thun meets on the Mühleplatz, which is located on the Aare between the old town and Bälliz. Here you can choose one of the many small restaurants and end the day comfortably with a drink.
