Hallig Langeneß – sunset kitsch at its best

After our Hallig-hopping tour, we leave the MS Eilun at the ferry pier of Langeneß. Langeneß has a number of Hallig superlatives to her name – she is the youngest, the largest and the longest Hallig. Around 120 inhabitants live on 18 terps. Langeneß is connected to Dagebüll on the mainland by a lorry dam – via Oland.

Here, too, the weather showed itself from the gloomy side at first. Langeneß can be discovered either by rental bike, with the Halligexpress or on foot. We opted for the latter due to the drizzle. Our walk takes us across the fields in the direction of the lighthouse and then past neatly separated cow pastures (not the pastures, but the cows are separated by color) to the Mayenswarf.

On the Mayenswarf is the first and for the time being only 4-star hotel on a Hallig and our home for the last night on the Halligen. By the way, Anker’s Hörn also picks up its hotel guests at the ferry pier. However, I deliberately decided to walk through rain and marsh world :). Our room is located directly under the roof and offers a phenomenal view over the Hallig and the adjacent Wadden Sea.

Sea air makes you hungry and so we make ourselves comfortable in the restaurant together with the other guests. The regionally inspired 3-course menus can be enjoyed with a view of the North Sea. But this will be our undoing. Pretty soon, we no longer pay attention to the delicacies on the plate, but to the evening natural spectacle in front of the hotel. The persistent cloud cover is merciful towards evening and leaves some space for the sun. For about half an hour we experience an unbelievably great sunset right in front of the hotel. True to the motto “the most beautiful at the end”, the Hallig Langeneß enchants us with a bombastic beacon in the middle of the North Sea. If we hadn’t already fallen for the Hallig charm at this point, this would certainly have convinced us completely.

Listen to the peace and quiet, watch the migratory birds, enjoy nature and wait until it gets dark – an all-round perfect evening at Hallig Langeneß.

The next morning we have to say goodbye. We continue our journey towards Hamburg. To catch our ferry, the Hilligenlei, you have to get up early. During breakfast we look a bit wistfully out of the window. The Halligwelt enchanted us and we would have liked to stay a little longer. Living here in the middle of the North Sea brought back memories of the book “The Discovery of Slowness”. In between, it’s a blessing to shift down a gear and just do nothing. The next time I long for peace and far-sightedness, I’ll go here!

The return trip in the direction of Schlüttsiel then offers Wadden Sea moments at their finest. I think the Halligen wanted to present themselves from their best side again, so that I won’t forget them. After these pictures, do you really have the feeling that I could ever forget such a unique place? And by the way, as we all know, anticipation is the greatest joy. So that I have my post-Hallig blues behind me as quickly as possible, I would like to know from YOU which North Sea places I should visit next time. I’m looking forward to your inspirations.

Note: The trip to the Halligen was supported by Nordsee Tourismus and the Halligen – thank you very much for this. As always, my readers can be sure that I always represent my views and enthusiasm here.
