InstaTour – fjords to dream about

And just like that, the first half is over. We are on a Hurtigruten ship somewhere between Molde and Trondheim, which we will reach this morning. For us, this means leaving the wonderful fjord landscapes behind us and dedicating the second half of our journey to central Norway and the high mountains.

The first five days were a rollercoaster of events. First of all, yes Norway is relatively expensive. The prices can be compared with those in Switzerland, but the price-performance ratio tends to be a little worse here. After a tough start in Oslo, where we were simply cancelled due to “overbooking” despite booking and early arrival (our suspicion is that I would have been the least paying guest due to the bargain on booking.com…), the first scenic highlights followed on the journey with the Bergen Railway and the Flåm Railway. In particular, the ride from the high plateau near Myrdal through the wild valley of Flåmsdalen down to the Aurlandsfjord is spectacular.

In Flåm we enjoyed the evening hours on the shore of the fjord. Afterwards, the journey by boat, bus and train took us through the Aurlandsfjord, the narrow Nærøyfjord – a great natural spectacle with its steep mountain slopes and many waterfalls – to Gudvangen at the end of the fjord valley Nærøydalen and from there via Voss to Bergen.

There we took a short fjord break and explored the pretty corners of the small town. By the way, I liked the many pretty alleys of the residential quarters much better than the probably most photographed waterfront of the famous Bryggen. After one day, the journey took us further north. We decided to take the Hurtigruten ferry as a means of transport to Trondheim. Especially because she makes a detour to the impressive Geirangerfjord. To get back to the clichés – yes, the average age on the ferry is 50+ years. It also has an above-average occurrence of rollators. Nevertheless, after five days in Norway, I would like to recommend you not to wait until you are old and active. And if my following first overview of Instagram pictures doesn’t convince you enough, then take a look at my Facebook page. There I share pictures of our highlights every day.

The second half will probably be more adventurous. For example, I don’t even know which means of transport we are supposed to use tomorrow from Trondheim to the “Giant Mountains”…
