Löwen Hotel – weekend break in Vorarlberg
By train to the Montafon
This time, the drive into the weekend takes just under 2.5 hours. The destination is the idyllic village of Schruns in Vorarlberg. Schruns is located in the heart of the Montafon. The enchanting valley stretches from the Bielerhöhe to Bludenz and is surrounded by three mighty mountain ranges. On the other side of the Bielerhöhe is Galtür, where a few weeks ago I made wobbly first gliding attempts on cross-country skis. In contrast to the Paznaun, the Montafon is much easier and faster to reach by public transport from Zurich. On the one hand, there is no need to travel through the Arlberg tunnel, and on the other hand, the Montafon Railway is perfectly adapted to the Railjet timetable compared to the Postbus service. So perfect that the three-minute delay in Bludenz almost makes us sweat.
Arrive and take a deep breath
The Löwen Hotel is located in the middle of Schruns. The 4-star superior country house reopened at the end of October 2013 in a completely new look. Previously, a lot of passion, time and money was put into the redesign of the lobby/bar and restaurant area as well as the rooms. The new interior design was created by Zurich-based Monoplan and is definitely something to be proud of. What excites me from the first moment is that a lot of emphasis was placed on small details and the regional reference.
In my opinion, the rooms are the absolute gem of the hotel. Framed with barn wood on the one hand and with mountain pictures as well as a cuckoo clock (who has ever seen a cuckoo clock in a hotel room? … Exactly!) on the other hand, they exude a warmth and cordiality. We feel right at home. It is also great how the seating area has been integrated into the room as a matter of course and completes the overall picture. The stylish and simple design invites you to take a deep breath and enjoy the fantastic mountain scenery of the Montafon to the fullest.
Wild hustle and bustle on the Golm
Saturday promises to be good. We start the day with an extraordinarily cheerful latte macchiatto and a delicious breakfast buffet at the Löwen Hotel. Then we make our way towards the fresh air. Both in summer and winter, the region offers a variety of activities for active guests. Just behind the Löwen is the Hochjochbahn, which takes winter sports enthusiasts directly to the Silvretta Montafon ski area. When crocuses and daffodils are already blooming down in the valley, you sometimes forget that there are still perfectly groomed slopes for sun skiing. Although, the sun doesn’t really work out today. We therefore take the Postbus to the valley station of the Golmerbahn, which is located above Tschagguns. Up here, the Jäger Ski World Championships are taking place this weekend. Even without the sun, it’s a lot of fun!
Spring idyll in Schruns
Back from the mountain, we stroll through the pretty town centre of Schruns. Along the Ill, the flowers and trees bloom in all their splendor. In the Café Konditorei Frederick we treat ourselves to a sweet break and enjoy the timid rays of sunshine fighting against the thick cloud cover.
Hot stones against everyday burdens
Back at the hotel, we dedicate ourselves to regeneration. The approximately 3,000 m2 wellness area of the Löwen Hotel is kept in “spa style” and is somewhat older than the rest of the converted hotel. Nevertheless, it convinces with its simple elegance, the bright rooms and the spacious heated indoor and outdoor pools. To top it all off, I treat myself to a 30-minute hot stone massage (47 euros). The gentle pressure of the hot stones relieves the tension of days of computer work. Wonderfully beneficial!
Let it come to an enjoyable end
We start the evening comfortably with an aperitif in the bar. Here, numerous armchairs entice you to linger or socialize. Large window fronts offer a wonderful view of the surrounding nature from the entire lounge area. The aperitif is followed by an enjoyable dinner. Particularly noteworthy here are the dessert creations, which are a true feast for the senses. Rarely have I received such exquisite desserts, in which down-to-earthness and a touch of exoticism were combined to create the perfect taste experience. My advice to you – it’s better to skip a course so that there is still enough appetite for the dessert.
The Löwen Hotel impresses with tasteful, individual furnishings and a wide range of offers for active holidaymakers. Ideal starting point for a long weekend without long and hectic travel stress. More impressions of the Löwen Hotel can also be found at Reisememo.
Note: I was invited by the Löwen Hotel Montafon to this relaxing weekend – thank you very much for this. As always, my readers can be sure that I always represent my views and enthusiasm here.
