Mountains and wellness in the Solbad in the Hotel Beatus in Merligen
Rarely do you have to travel far to discover great places and experience beautiful moments. Unfortunately, we despise the near far too often because it seems too boring. That’s why I always make an effort to drive through my home country with my eyes open and explore corners that are unknown to me. For this reason, we recently made our way to the Riviera from Lake Thun to the Merligen brine baths.
Merligen on Lake Thun
In fact, the beautiful Lake Thun also has its irresistible Riviera, which is usually spoiled with a lot of sun. Merligen is such a sun-drenched village on the southern slope of the Niederhorn, directly on the shores of Lake Thun and not to be overlooked are the numerous palm trees (which are all a bit small…). Merligen can be easily reached from Thun in half an hour by bus and is therefore always worth a short trip.

The unique panorama of the imposing Bernese Alps, the fresh sea air, the pretty chalets and, of course, the palm trees make you feel like you’re on holiday. To enhance the holiday feeling even more, we treated ourselves to some relaxation in the Merligen brine bath, which belongs to the Wellness & Spa Hotel Beatus.
In contrast to the thermal bath, a brine bath is bathed in 35°C warm salt water (so-called natural brine). The salt comes from the Rhine salt pans and was formed millions of years ago in the inland sea. This type of bath, similar to a thermal bath, supports physical well-being and can alleviate various physical ailments.
The great thing about the brine bath Beatus is the small but fine outdoor pool, which borders almost directly on the lake and offers a fantastic mountain panorama on the Niesen. Equipped with various massage jets and bubble effects, relaxation is guaranteed :-)! If you want to visit the sauna area in addition to the brine pool, you should pay attention to the opening hours. The brine pool is open daily from 8.00 a.m. to 9.30 p.m., the sauna area does not open until 2.30 p.m. The entrance to the Merligen brine pool costs 31 CHF for 2 hours in winter, which I find rather expensive, as there are no other bathing areas apart from an outdoor and indoor pool.
In any case, we felt incredibly relaxed after 2 hours of bathing fun and then took a short walk to the beautiful stone church, which is enthroned a little above the Merligen, for refreshment. Absolutely recommended, because in addition to the church you can enjoy a wonderful view across Lake Thun.
We then took the bus back to Thun and finally enjoyed a phenomenal Chocolat Mélange in one of my favorite coffees in Thun – the AEK Kaffee, right on the banks of the Aare. An all-round successful “mini” excursion.
