A place for all occasions

As great as the disappointment in Belém was, it disappeared just as quickly. Back from Belém, the Bairro Alto was on the agenda. The original working-class district is located above the Baixa business district and requires a certain basic level of fitness. One thing I learned in Portugal: A beautiful city has many hills. I like hills and immediately felt comfortable in the steep alleys of Bairro Alto. The alleys, which exude an almost idyllic charm during the day, are transformed into a colourful nightlife Mecca in the evening. Numerous restaurants, bars and clubs are located in the old buildings.

My recommendation for the Bairro Alto: Let yourself drift freely through the alleys. There are no pompous sights to marvel at. It is much more important to find the beauty in the details and the originality.

But there is one place not to be missed under any circumstances – the Jardim de S. Pedro de Alcantara. From here you can enjoy an incredible view over Lisbon. Sit here for a moment and watch the city go by. It’s worth it.
