Skiing in Heidiland
When it comes to skiing, I’m a creature of habit – as a native of Bern, I always went skiing in the Bernese Oberland and Valais to support regional development. The highest of the feelings was probably Sörenberg in Entlebuch or Lungern-Schönbüel (which, by the way, has stopped skiing for this season) in Obwalden. After I had my skiing debut in Austria last week, I thought this would be a good opportunity to conquer the eastern part of Switzerland in terms of skiing. The only question remained: Where to go first?
We then decided on the Flumserberg ski area high above Lake Walen in the canton of St. Gallen. From Zurich, the ski area can be reached in one hour directly via Unterterzen via the S-Bahn at certain times. The Snow’n’Rail day ticket costs CHF 51 with GA travelcard including a 15% discount on ski rental at Intersport.
In Unterterzen there is an Intersport right next to the train station. I was a bit surprised by the rush, but obviously I’m not the only skier without my own skis… I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the rented skis. So far, I had always gotten Völkl skis and was actually quite satisfied. Since all the people were already gone, the gentleman from the ski rental gave me the Atomic Cloud D2 75 – cost with ski boots for one day: 62 CHF. I absolutely loved this ski and I would have loved to buy it right away! It is absolutely soft and agile and adapts perfectly to the driving situation. You almost don’t need any strength anymore to make the beautiful turns :-).
The Flumserberg ski area was much larger than expected. It has a total of 16 cable cars (most of which are chairlifts), various fun parks and a toboggan run. The panorama of the Churfirsten and Lake Walen is also impressive. When skiing, you sometimes almost feel like you’re landing in a lake. Conclusion: Ideal ski resort with versatile slopes for a “close to the city” Saturday or Sunday excursion. The impressions are summarized in the following video:
