The bear is on the loose at the Hotel Piz Buin Klosters
It’s rare that I fall in love with a hotel restaurant even before I’ve moved into my room. But that’s exactly what happened last weekend – I fell in love with bears! … But first things first: Our first Swiss ski weekend of this winter season takes us to Klosters. The small but no less well-known sister of Davos can be easily reached by train from Zurich in just under two hours. You only have to change trains once, in Landquart. At Klosters train station, just opposite the Gotschnabahn, the words “Après-ski zone Klosters only a few meters to bears are emblazoned in large letters. Perfect, we think because bears belongs to our host, the Hotel Piz Buin Klosters.
The hotel itself is just 200 meters from the train station. Since our stomachs are growling, we inspect the Bär’s before we have taken a closer look at our room. What we see is inspiring. If you now have the cheap après-ski tents in mind, you will be taught something better. In a cozy, stylish ambience with lots of wood and muted colors, an oasis of well-being has been created. No kitsch, no deliberate quaintness, but down-to-earth ambience. Perfect for switching off and starting the weekend. A look at the map is just as inspiring. We order a Graubünden Salsiz plate as a starter (12.50 CHF) and eat the bear as a main course (with cheese 25.50 CHF). The fact that the drinks menu includes a selection of non-alcoholic drinks is the icing on the cake.
Satiated and completely satisfied, we finally take a closer look at our room. Hotel Piz Buin has a total of 53 rooms. Of these, 21 have been completely renewed this summer and guests now have the choice between Classic (from CHF 115 depending on the season) and Alpine Chic (from CHF 165 depending on the season).
Now the term “alpine chic” is extremely trendy currently and every second hotel in the mountains now uses it in the room description: but how chic are the rooms in Piz Buin really? The comparison with the Classic rooms clearly shows what the guest wants in today’s world. Lots of wood (the carpet has been replaced by beautiful parquet), soft basic tone with color accents and skillfully placed decorative elements result in a harmonious overall concept. In the bathroom, the greenish 80s interior has been completely replaced. With the materials used (wood and stone), the mountain world is brought directly inside.
Our room is one of the so-called studios, which have a small kitchenette in addition to the large floor space. Perfect for a ski holiday, where on the one hand you always need a lot of storage space for the thousand things you take with you. And on the other hand, you are happy to have the opportunity to warm up soup directly in your room. Personally, I am very enthusiastic about the new rooms. The wooden floor in particular is a real gem.
We then snuggle up to the deer in bed and sleep – as is so often the case in the mountains – excellently.
We wake up with the first hesitant rays of sunshine fighting their way over the Silvretta massif. Nothing stands in the way of a wonderful day of skiing. First, however, we fortify ourselves at the breakfast buffet, which is included in all room rates at Piz Buin (whether studio or normal room). Fried egg and muesli taste great. In contrast to the scrambled eggs, which somehow didn’t look so freshly prepared and was cold. A bit of a disappointment is also the cheese selection. While I’m in the mountains, I want to have some local cheese to choose from. Maybe it even has. Unfortunately, you don’t notice any of it because everything was already cut into thin slices, which always remind me of this terrible Edam. P.S. the Hotel Piz Buin will offer local cheese in one piece in the future: top reaction! So you can look forward :). And if someone gets something that they are not 100% satisfied with (like me with the scrambled eggs), you should report it immediately so that it can be fixed.
After breakfast, we shoulder our skis and walk the 200 m to the Gotschnabahn, which leads up to the Parsenn ski area, which is connected to Davos. There will be a separate article about the ski area and the other activities in Klosters. However, one thing can already be said that Hotel Piz Buin offers the ideal starting point for a successful skiing holiday.
After a strenuous day on the slopes, we use the time between après-ski and dinner for a detour to the wellness area of the hotel. Get out of your ski suit and into your fluffy bathrobe. The wellness area is small but nice and modern. It has a steam bath, a bio sauna, a Finnish sauna, three experience showers, foot baths and a relaxation room. The music provides amusement. Someone must have confused the usual relaxation music with the après-ski mixtape. In any case, “Alors on danse” sounds cheerfully from the loudspeakers. But yes, the bear is on the loose ;).
If you are staying in Klosters, I can highly recommend the Hotel Piz Buin. And no matter if classic or alpine chic: the secret winner is the hip bear.
Note: I was invited by the Hotel Piz Buin – thank you very much for this. As always, my readers can be sure that I always represent my views and enthusiasm here.
