Niederhorn – toboggan hiking with a panorama

“This path is not considered a toboggan run” is written in the route description of the Panorama Winter Hiking Trail Niederhorn – Hohwald – Waldegg. Unofficially, this approximately 10 km long winter hiking trail, which leads from the Niederhorn mountain station down to Waldegg, is considered an insider tip for tobogganing. Not all sections are equally sloping and so there is a good mix of tobogganing, leisurely winter hiking and rapid downhill runs (I now call this “sledding”). There is also enough time to pause in between and marvel at the fantastic panorama of the Bernese Alps. In my opinion, this peak high above Lake Thun offers one of the most beautiful views in the canton of Bern and is a popular destination in summer and winter.

For a picnic break, the bench on the south side of the Oberburgfeldhütte is a good choice. Otherwise, there is not much more to say about it except: the following pictures show the Swiss winter in perfection ;)!

Practical information:

The map shows our route. The route is about 10 km long with an altitude difference of about 750 meters. It took us a good 2 hours (including short breaks). The starting point is the mountain station of the Beatenberg-Niederhorn cable car (cost of the cable car from Beatenberg 14 CHF – birthday children travel for free). The hike ends at the Waldegg car park, where there is also a post bus stop. Insider tip for drivers: Park your car at the Waldegg car park and then take the post bus to Beatenberg. So you can go straight home after the hike without waiting.
