OrangeCinema – my Swiss cinema summer
I’m the kind of person who stays loyal to my homeland in the summer. After all, Swiss cities are rarely as relaxed as they are from mid-July to mid-August, when the majority of people travel south (or north) thanks to summer holidays. Well, before I go back to the end of August in search of the most beautiful alpine pastures and mountain peaks, four Swiss cities will come into focus here in the next few weeks.
Like every year, the cinema summer is just around the corner. The OrangeCinema has set up its big screen in Zurich, Bern, Basel and Geneva and attracts visitors with a diverse programme. I am one of the lucky ones who have been provided with a member card by OrangeCinema and this summer I am allowed to watch and report on the films of my choice.

The cinema summer kicked off last Thursday in Zurich with the preview of the film “The Sapphires”. By the way, the summer cinema at the Zürichhorn is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Since the weather on the Zürichhorn showed its stormy side, I was torn between “holding out” or going home. I finally agreed on a compromise that I would stay until the break. The final decision was then taken away from me, because after 103 minutes I realized that a) the film is already finished and b) there has been no break. By the way, the film – four young ladies from Australia who are supposed to entertain US troops in Vietnam as a soul band – inspired me. With wit, charm and above all great music (!), the time flew by despite strong gusts of wind and individual raindrops.
By the way, the film will be shown next Thursday, July 25 in Bern and on Sunday, July 28 in Basel. Please note that, as always, OrangeCinema tickets do not include a seat reservation. If you think that you can’t see equally well from all seats, you should be ready when the doors open at 7:00 p.m. and secure a seat.
How does my cinema summer continue? As already mentioned, Swiss cities are most beautiful in summer, so I will extend my cinema experience a bit and report on each OrangeCinema city in detail – including food tips, sights and hotel presentations. I’m really looking forward to it – my program looks like this for the time being:
Zurich
Film: Before Midnight / ev. Orange Night with surprise film
Hotel: The Flag Zurich – Opening in August
Bern
Film: More Than Honey
Hotel: Schweizerhof Bern
Basel
Film: Night train to Lisbon / ev. The Great Gatsby
Hotel: Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois Basel
Geneva
Film: Le Grand Bleu
Hotel: Mövenpick Hotel Geneva
If the weather is good, one or the other film will be added spontaneously. If you know of great summer resorts in the respective cities – swimming, eating, relaxing, enjoying – then leave me a comment. I will then pick out the highlights.
