Holidays in Madeira
The flower island in the Pacific
The flower island of Madeira is one of the most fascinating travel destinations in the Atlantic. The beautiful island is a little out of the way. Nevertheless, it is easily accessible for tourists and adventurers alike. The island’s small airport is easy to reach, especially from the Portuguese mainland.

Madeira is characterized by its diversity. Fantastic black sand beaches – yes, the sand is black here – a rough mountain landscape and an indescribable diversity of flora and fauna make the island a paradise. The Pico Ruivo is visible from afar, rising majestically to a height of 1,862 meters above the island. Hikers and mountaineers in particular will find their hearts beating faster here. From simple walks to challenging climbing routes, everything is on offer here. The island is suitable for solo travelers as well as for couples or the whole family. No matter whether you are looking for peace and relaxation or are a little more adventurous, no matter whether your heart beats for hiking or swimming: there is definitely no chance of boredom here.

Historical overview
There are some indications that the dream island was already settled by the Phoenicians in the 6th century BC. The Portuguese come into play much later, in 1419. Shortly afterwards, settlement was encouraged by the Portuguese crown. The locals celebrate the year as the year of its rediscovery, even though it is known that an important shipping base was established here around 100 years earlier. Christopher Columbus also visited the island in 1478.

The capital Funchal
Those interested in culture will also get their money’s worth. Founded in 1421, Funchal was granted city rights by Manuel I in 1508. Numerous sights from the past century amaze visitors. Numerous historical buildings bear witness to an eventful time. From the unique botanical garden just outside the city you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Funchal. No visitor should miss a walk through the Mercado dos Lavradores fish market.
