Discover Frankfurt from the Main
The best way to judge how impressive the high-rise ensemble of Frankfurt’s city centre really is is from an appropriate distance. What could be better suited for this than a boat trip on the wide, lazily flowing Main. Two different shipping companies dock near the Eiserner Steg. For timetable reasons, we chose the somewhat expensive Primus Line. The routes lead either about 50 minutes in the direction of Offenbach / Gerbermühle or Griesheim – tickets for single trips cost around 8 euros per adult. In addition, combination tickets (100 minutes) can be purchased for around 10 euros.
We were not deterred by the gloomy clouds, chose the variant 50 minutes in the direction of Offenbach and looked for a place on the “sun deck”.
Slowly we chugged off. The stiff breeze caused a lot of confusion on the head and the feet were able to recover a bit from the sightseeing exertions. The further our ship moves away from the shore, the more impressive the modern cityscape of Frankfurt is perceived. In between, there are also some historical witnesses to discover.
Along the beautifully designed banks of the Main, the boat trip leads past some residential pearls mixed with industrial “remains”, exciting bridge constructions and the construction site of the new ECB (architectural firm Coop Himmelb(l)au) into the Osthafen, one of the central European transshipment points. Afterwards there is a short stop at the Gerbermühle before heading back towards the Eiserner Steg.
Very entertaining 50 minutes, which presented Frankfurt to us from a completely new perspective.
