Top excursion destinations in Switzerland: 99 ideas for a great day trip

Looking for ideas for your next day trip? Voilà, that’s exactly why I’ve collected my favorite discoveries of the last few years and present here 99 great excursion destinations from Aigle to Zermatt – once across Switzerland, with everything from day trips to weekend trips.

August is anniversary month – since the blog was launched in August six years ago, TRAVELITA has had a steadily growing readership, which motivates me immensely. Since I know that many of you regularly stop by here in search of ideas for excursion destinations and hiking tips, I have come up with something special for the six-year anniversary. With over 700 blog articles that have come together here in the past six years, it is not easy to find the right excursion tip with one click. That’s why I’ve now made this map with 99 “hand-selected” Swiss excursion destinations including descriptions. The map is intended to give you an idea at a glance of what exciting things you can do in your area on the next free Saturday. I hope you enjoy browsing through the excursion destinations for Switzerland!

Map with the most beautiful excursion destinations and day trips in Switzerland

My top excursion destinations and day trips in French-speaking Switzerland

1. Excursion destination Switzerland – Wine Museum in Aigle

Aigle is not only a pretty town with a historic centre, but also offers a great destination for rainy days with the wine museum in the venerable castle, surrounded by idyllic vineyards. Despite its location in historic premises, the museum is by no means dusty, but convinces with an interactive exhibition about the history of viticulture. If you want to taste a fine local wine after the museum tour, you can stop off at the BadouxThèque in Yvorne. This is where the well-known “Eidechsli wine” is served.

2. Excursion Switzerland – Gorge de l’Areuse

In search of routes from the Jura to the Swiss Plateau, rivers have dug deep gorges into the hilly landscape. One of them is the Areuse Gorge between the Val-de-Travers and Lake Neuchâtel. The approximately three-hour hike along the cheerfully bubbling Areuse from Noiraigue to Boudry is a blessing, especially on hot summer days. In the depths of the gorge there is always a pleasantly cool breeze.

3. Sight in French-speaking Switzerland – Château de Chillon

Like a moated castle, Chillon Castle juts out into Lake Geneva and is a popular photo motif for visitors to the Lake Geneva region. It is worthwhile not only to admire the castle from the outside, but also to go on a discovery tour inside. Every Sunday afternoon there are interactive guided tours of the castle in German, English and French, which are included in the entrance fee.

4. Excursion destination Switzerland – Doubs

Over a length of 40 kilometres in the northwestern tip of Switzerland, the Doubs forms the natural border between France and Switzerland. The “Au fil du Doubs” hiking trail runs parallel to it, leading from Les Brenets to St-Ursanne in a total of four daily stages. A wonderfully decelerating route through partly mangrove-like river banks and primeval floodplain landscapes. If you only have one day, I recommend a detour to the “Saut du Doubs” waterfall near Les Brenets. A must-try is also a “trout blue” in one of the restaurants along the Doubs. My restaurant tip: The charming Maison Biaufond in Les Bois.

5. Day Trip Switzerland – Gastlosen

Some affectionately refer to them as the “Saaneland Dolomites” and indeed, the Gastlosen with their striking limestone cliffs are reminiscent of the famous peaks of the Southern Limestone Alps. On the Gastlosen circular hike (about 4 hours, 11 kilometres) you can study the rugged rock faces from all sides in detail, but also admire the wonderful panorama over the Saaneland, Simmental and the Bernese Alps.

6. Excursion destination Switzerland – Sights in Geneva

Geneva not only exudes international flair, but also offers other exciting sights in addition to its most famous landmark – the Jet d’eau – making it an ideal destination for a city trip to French-speaking Switzerland. A highlight for me is the view over the city center from the north tower of Saint-Pierre Cathedral. And art lovers should plan a trip to the hip Quartier des Bains and visit the Museum of Contemporary Art.

7. Excursions Switzerland – Gruyères

A trip to Gruyères is worthwhile not only because of the picturesque historic town with its castle, but also because there is nowhere else to find such good double cream. Also worth seeing is the show dairy at the Maison du Gruyère and the interactive chocolate world at Maison Cailler in the neighbouring village of Broc. A visit to the two culinary sites can be combined with a hike on the Chemin du Gruyère.

8. Excursion destination Switzerland – La Chaux-de-Fonds

In my opinion, La Chaux-de-Fonds, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most underrated cities in Switzerland. Here you can not only visit one of the first buildings designed by le Corbusier (Maison Blanche), but also learn a lot about the history of timekeeping (e.g. in the Musée International de l’Horlogerie).

9. Switzerland Excursions – Lausanne

Lausanne is a lively student city and offers a wide range of events. For the foodies among you, I recommend checking out Lausanne à Table’s calendar of events, and architecture fans shouldn’t miss the Rolex Learning Center on the EPFL campus, designed by Japanese architecture firm SANAA. Whether it’s the hilly old town, the modern Flon district or the spacious lakeside promenade in Ouchy – Lausanne is able to meet many demands.

10. Day trip Switzerland – Neuchâtel

Stately building facades, witty street art artworks, brightly painted fountains, small shops and winding doorways; the old town of Neuchâtel has an incredible amount of charm and awakens the desire to explore. If you follow the cobbled streets uphill, sooner or later you will end up at the city’s landmark – the castle. Also exciting is the Centre Dürrenmatt, designed by Mario Botta, high above the old town centre.

11. Excursion ideas Switzerland – Porrentruy

It is not obvious that the second largest city in the canton of Jura is a worthwhile destination for a day trip. During a stroll through the old town, however, the special flair of the city quickly becomes apparent; beautiful town houses with turrets and winding courtyards, babbling fountains, an idyllic botanical garden and the castle characterize the cityscape. The Circuit Secret also offers a look behind the beautifully plastered facades. And if you feel hungry after an extensive stroll through the alleys of the old town, you can stop off at the authentic Auberge du Mouton pub. Here, seasonal dishes from the region are served.

12. Excursion destinations Switzerland – Saignelégier

Sleeping high in the treetops and then exploring the Jura plateau on foot, by bike or on horseback? This is possible, for example, in the tree house at Camping de Saignelégier, and in the immediate vicinity is also the idyllic moor lake Etang de la Gruère.

13. Excursion destination Switzerland – Vallée du Joux

No, you don’t just pass this plateau by chance. The location of the Vallée du Joux in the westernmost tip of Switzerland is too secluded. But that’s exactly why the valley has been able to preserve its originality. Water lovers will find ideal conditions for sailing and windsurfing on the Lac de Joux thanks to the constant wind. And if you prefer to walk, you can walk around the lake on the 23-kilometre Tour du Lac de Joux.

14. Day Trip Switzerland – Aare Gorge

Just outside Meiringen, the Aare has dug deep into the rock faces over a length of 1.5 kilometres and winds its way down the narrow gorge at breakneck speed. This natural spectacle can be explored on a narrow path paved to the rock faces – about half of the route is handicapped accessible and wheelchair accessible. For the entire route between the Aare Gorge West Entrance and the East Entrance, approx. 40 minutes walking time must be calculated.

15. Excursion destination Switzerland – Arnensee in the Bernese Oberland

Lake Arnen, not far from Gstaad, is a gem in the Bernese Oberland. On hot summer days, the dark green shimmering reservoir invites you to take a wonderfully refreshing swim. If you like it cosy, you can take a walk around the lake in just over an hour and then order fine appetizers on the sun terrace of the Huus restaurant on Lake Arnensee. The sportier variant takes you in 2 hours from the Col du Pillon over the Col de Voré to the shores of Lake Arnen.

16. Experiences Switzerland – Ballenberg Open-Air Museum

In my opinion, you can visit the Ballenberg again and again, because there is always something new to discover. Be it as a family outing with children, with guests from abroad or simply as a spontaneous Sunday excursion for two – the extensive open-air museum with its various walking paths and interactive offers meets many requirements and best of all: bad weather becomes a minor matter here.

17. Attraction Switzerland – Culture in Basel

In no other Swiss city is the density of museums as high as in Basel; from the Kunstmuseum Basel to the Kunsthalle and the Fondation Beyeler, art fans will find a wide selection of exciting exhibitions. On top of that, Basel impresses with a beautiful old town centre, a laid-back alternative scene in Kleinbasel and modern buildings – including those designed by local star architects Herzog & de Meuron. The best thing to do is to take a weekend to immerse yourself in Basel’s art and culture scene.

18. Day Trip Switzerland – Biel Old Town

The old town of Biel is a bit “off the beaten track”, but is a true gem. Cobblestones, arcades, charming squares and casual boutiques. If you stroll through the alleys without haste, you are sure to discover one or the other trouvaille and then head for the cozy veranda of the pop-up Villa Lindenegg for an aperitif. The first Friday of each month is particularly attractive. The “First Friday” event provides entertainment for shops, cultural institutions, galleries, restaurants and bars. 19. Excursion in Switzerland – Hike to the Geltenschuss

If you don’t shy away from a few metres in altitude, you will find pure nature high above Lake Lauenen near Gstaad! The ascent from Lake Lauenen to the Geltenhütte is just under 4 kilometres and 650 metres in altitude – always in view: the magnificent Geltenschuss. Once at the top, you can fortify yourself on the terrace of the SAC hut with a fine piece of homemade cake and then hike back down into the valley with a far-reaching view over the Saaneland.

20. Excursion destination Switzerland – Grimsel Pass

In a total of 110 kilometres, the Via Sbrinz leads from Ponte in Italy to Stansstad, following the old mule tracks on which the recent hard cheese made its way from Central Switzerland to Italy in exchange for wine, corn, rice and oil. One of the most beautiful sections of the route is the 24-kilometre-long route from Guttannen over the Grimsel Pass to Obergstein im Goms. Not only do you hike along historic paths, but you also have the opportunity to buy fine mountain cheese at the Handegg alpine cheese dairy, or to taste a fine plate of regional meat and cheese products at the Grimsel Hospice.

21. Day Trip Switzerland – Kleine Scheidegg

Whether it’s for the Eiger Trail in the direction of Grindelwald or for the Panorama Trail in the direction of Männlichen – Kleine Scheidegg is a perfect starting point for easy, entertaining hikes with maximum mountain experience. Nowhere else can you get as close to the Eiger as on the legendary Eiger Trail towards Alpbiglen / Grindelwald. Alternatively, the Männlichen – Kleine Scheidegg panorama trail offers a magnificent panoramic view of the majestic triumvirate of the Bernese Oberland – Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

22. Swiss Day Trip – Hasliberg

With the Muggestutz, the Hasliberg not only offers a family-friendly hike, but also attracts city dwellers up into the beautiful mountain world with the varied cultural programme (and the hay schnapps) at the Hotel Wetterhorn.

23. Excursion destination Switzerland – Hintere Lauterbrunnental

The Hintere Lauterbrunnen Valley is a real gem! From the beginning of June to the end of September, the Kerzenhotel Berghotel Obersteinberg offers a quaint, cosy base for high-alpine tours at the foot of the Tschingelhorn and Breithorn.

24. Switzerland Excursion Destinations – Kiental

At the very end of the Kiental valley, the postbus drivers are called upon – this is where the steepest postbus route in Europe is located. But the “stodgy” section between Tschingelsee and Griesalp is not exciting to experience in the post bus, but can also be hiked well. In just over 4.5 hours, the white-water trail leads from Kiental Dorf up to the Griesalp. The most spectacular section is the Gries Gorge with its thunderous Pochtenfall and bubbling witches’ cauldron. If you need a breather on the way, you will certainly find a sunny spot on the terrace of the Hotel Waldrand Pochtenalp.

25. Excursion destination – Simmen Falls on Lenk

If you like waterfalls, you shouldn’t miss the impressive Simmen Falls on Lenk. The excursion can be combined with a short hike (about 40 minutes uphill) to the Simmen spring “Sibe Brünne“. Ambitious mountaineers even have the opportunity to combine three waterfalls with each other: the Iffigfall, the Sibe Brünne and the Simmenfall – around 6 hours are to be calculated for this round trip.

26.Insider Tip Excursion Switzerland – View from the Lueg

The vantage point on the Lueg near Affoltern in the Emmental is just the right destination for a leisurely Sunday excursion with your loved ones. Up here you can get some fresh air and at the same time enjoy the unique view of the Bernese Alps, which tower up behind the hilly landscape of the Emmental.

27. Day Trip – Museum Franz Gertsch in Burgdorf

In Burgdorf, a museum is dedicated to one of Switzerland’s most important contemporary artists. Franz Gertsch’s works are always surprising and fascinating – for example, the photorealistic 4 Seasons, which I, as a layman, would never mistake for a painting from a distance. So if you don’t have any plans for the next rainy weekend and like art, you’ll do everything right with a trip to Burgdorf.

28. Excursion – Thal Nature Park

The Thal Nature Park encompasses the hills of the Solothurn Jura between Weissenstein and Wasserfallen and, due to its high altitude, is an ideal hiking destination, especially in spring and late autumn. The nature park is also crossed by the Jura High Trail, which runs 320 kilometres from Diesldorf to Nyon. The fifth stage, Balsthal – Weissenstein, covers one of the best parts of the Thal Nature Park and, in addition to hiking fun, also offers magnificent views over the Swiss Plateau to the Alps.

29. Attractions Switzerland – Niesen

With its distinctive shape – almost a perfect pyramid – the Niesen attracts attention. With an altitude difference of 1,669 metres from the valley station in Mülenen in the Kandertal to the summit, it is also considered an ideal training mountain. If you don’t want to show up with a bright red head at the “Bärgzmorge” (or alternatively the weekend brunch on weekends), you can comfortably be chauffeured up by funicular. Either way, a magnificent view over Lake Thun awaits you at the top.

30. Day Trip Switzerland – St. Peter’s Island

Anyone who visits St. Peter’s Island in Lake Biel will understand why the enterprising philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau fell in love with this idyllic spot – the place radiates a palpable calm. When Rousseau visited the island in the 18th century, it was only accessible by boat, as one island suggests. It was not until 100 years later that the Jurassic water correction transformed the island into a peninsula. Now it can be reached on foot – without getting your feet wet – from Erlach via the Heideweg. The infrastructure has remained the same. Then as now, the Restaurant & Klosterhotel St. Petersinsel provides hospitality and enjoyable hours.

31. Excursion destination Switzerland – Schilthorn

High above the Lauterbrunnen Valley, whose landscape inspired Tolkien to create the Hobbit home of Rivendell, lies the idyllic town of Mürren. If it hadn’t been for the sudden appearance of 007 himself in 1968 in the service of His Majesty and his mission had helped the barely completed revolving restaurant on the Schilthorn to become world famous, hardly anyone would know this mountain village today. On nice days, the Schilthorn is one of the top vantage points in the Bernese Oberland and even in bad weather, an excursion is not for the faint-hearted. The summit is also home to the so-called Bond World 007, which offers an interactive experience centered around James Bond’s missions.

32. Insider tip – Sigriswil

Sigriswil high above Lake Thun offers not only a beautiful view, but also thrills. In October 2012, the 340-metre-long and 180-metre-high panorama bridge was inaugurated as a link between Sigriswil and Aeschlen. The long-term goal of the initiators is a bridge path spanning Lake Thun with a total of four suspension bridges. Currently, three out of four suspension bridges have already been implemented and can be experienced on the Lake Thun Panorama Trail.

33. Day Trip Switzerland – Solothurn

A mix of Italian baroque architecture, French charm and German-speaking Swiss down-to-earthness can be found in Solothurn. Especially on market days, the pretty town on the Aare is a worthwhile destination. My tip: Stock up on all kinds of delicacies from the farmers from the region and then take a look at the magnificent St. Ursus Cathedral. The view into the nave is just as worthwhile as the sweaty climb up the tower – nowhere else is there such a great bird’s eye view over the city centre.

34. Excursion destination Switzerland – Trümmelbach Falls

It is an impressive natural spectacle that takes place not far from Lauterbrunnen in the interior of the Mönch rock massif. This is where the Trümmelbach Falls are located – the world’s only accessible underground glacier waterfalls. The masses of water that roar down from the glacier walls of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau vary seasonally. As a rule, the Trümmelbach Falls receive the most water during the period of snowmelt from June to April. The falls can be visited daily from April to November. The entrance ticket costs CHF 11 for adults (as of 2018).

35. Twannbachschlucht

The Twannbachschlucht is located not far from Biel and is a popular destination for nature photographers. With numerous smaller and larger waterfalls, the gorge offers a wealth of exciting photo opportunities. If you don’t just want to focus on photography, but also want to explore the nature around you, you can start the excursion high above Biel in Magglingen. From there you hike in a good three hours via Twannberg through the Twannbach gorge to the wine-growing village of Twann. On hot summer days, be sure to pack your swimsuit – in Twann there are one or two idyllic bays directly on Lake Biel.

36. Aelggialp

If you want to be right in the geographical centre of Switzerland, you have to take a trip to the Älggialp near Sachseln in the canton of Obwalden. In addition to visiting the geographical centre of Switzerland, the Älggialp is also a good starting point for a casual mountain tour in the canton of Obwalden. The Obwaldner Höhenweg leads past the alp, which connects the Brünig Pass with Melchsee-Frutt, and an hour’s walk above the Älggialp is the beautiful Seefeldsee.

37. Excursion to Altdorf

A trip to Altdorf may not be obvious. But the capital of Uri has more to offer than the famous Tell monument. The off-road game “Tatort Tell“, for example, guarantees family fun and at the same time allows you to get to know Altdorf and the surrounding area better.

38. Idea for a day trip – Bannalp

A beautiful high valley including a mountain lake, a cosy mountain restaurant with sun terrace and starting point for a variety of exciting mountain tours over the Bannalp Pass into the Uri region or via the Walenpfad to Engelberg; the Bannalp is a worthwhile excursion destination for all those who like to spend time in the midst of a magnificent mountain backdrop.

39. Excursion destination Switzerland – Engstlensee

Central Switzerland boasts a large number of beautiful mountain lakes. Of course, the Engstlensee should not be missing, although it is theoretically located in the municipality of Innertkirchen and thus in the canton of Bern. A classic that makes hikers’ hearts beat faster is the 4-lake hike from the Trübsee station in Engelberg over the Jochpass down to the Engstlensee, from there via Tannensee to Melchsee on the Melchsee-Frutt.

40. Excursion destinations with overnight stay – Flüeli-Ranft

2017 marked the 600th anniversary of the birth of Niklaus von der Flüe – also known as Brother Klaus. His hermit cell in the Ranft Gorge near Flüeli-Ranft is still one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Switzerland and a place to recharge your batteries. Just above the pilgrimage site is the Hotel Paxmontana, which, after extensive renovation and thanks to excellent regional cuisine, has established itself as a retreat for those seeking peace and quiet and connoisseurs.

41. Secret Places Switzerland – Fluonalp

It is a well-kept insider tip of the Central Swiss; the Fluonalp high above Lake Sarnen scores with a magnificent view and fine house specialties. These include the Giswiler Älplermagronen, the Fluonalper Chässchnitte and the Fluonalp-Plättli with sliced cheese, Sbrinzmöckli, dried meat, sausage and bacon. The cheese is made daily in the summer months in the alpine cheese dairy right next door.

42. Excursion in Switzerland – Lake Golzern

On a sunny plateau high above the Maderanertal is the Golzernsee, picturesquely embedded in the landscape. It doesn’t take much effort to get to the shore – a cable car runs from Bristen to Egg and from there it’s a leisurely 20-minute walk on a well-maintained gravel path. If an afternoon at the mountain lake is not enough action for you, you can work out on the 16-kilometre-long Maderanertal high-altitude trail.

Back to map

43. Excursion tip in Switzerland – Gotthard Pass

Historic road construction, insights into old fortifications and magnificent high alpine terrain all around. The Gotthard Pass is more than just a traffic artery to the south. If you have enough time, you can first admire the beautifully curved Tremola, then visit the formerly top-secret fortress Sasso San Gottardo, then lace up your hiking boots and set off on the 5-lake hike towards Realp. There is no shortage of beautiful photo opportunities along the way.

Back to map

44. Excursion destination in the canton of Uri – Isenthal

There are around 40 cable cars in the canton of Uri, which are primarily used to access remote farms and are also used for tourism. On some rustically designed trains, the thrill of the journey is part of it. This is also the case on the Altdorf-Isenthal-Altdorf circular hike, where a total of three steep sections with adventurous cable car routes are overcome.

Back to map

45. Outdoor Activities Switzerland – Leglerhütte

The modern SAC hut is located in the middle of Europe’s oldest wildlife sanctuary and is located in a privileged location high above three mountain lakes. Thanks to its relatively easy accessibility, the Leglerhütte is a great entry point for mountaineers who are inexperienced in huts.

Back to map

46. Well-known excursion destination – Pilatus

The Pilatus is a “sieve” – be it for a nice after-work tour by bike, the daily workout on the mountain, the adrenaline rush in the rope park, the Sunday excursion to air out your head or to impress guests from abroad with the phenomenal view over Lake Lucerne; Lucerne’s local mountain meets many requirements and is therefore suitable for a spontaneous visit every now and then.

Back to map

47. Excursion with a view – Stanserhorn

Another great excursion mountain on Lake Lucerne is the Stanserhorn. There, the ride to the summit already includes “wow moments”. At least if the weather permits a ride on the convertible deck of the gondola.

48. Beautiful place in Switzerland – Urnerboden

The Urnerboden on the Klausenpass route is the perfect Swiss postcard motif for me. The scattered alpine settlement is simply pretty to look at. But here is not only something for the eye, but there is also the opportunity to take a piece of this mountain idyll home. The alpine cheese dairy in the village sells fresh Uri alpine cheese, boiled butter and in-house fondue mixes. On the way back to the valley, it is worth taking a detour to the hidden Berglistüber waterfall.

49. Day trip at the lake – Vitznau

While most day-trippers in Vitznau head straight for the Rigibergbahn, I have a tip for you off the beaten track. Above the outskirts of the village of Vitznau is the “Chestene Trail“, which is entirely dedicated to the theme of chestnut trees. The theme trail leads from Immensee/Küssnacht along the southern slope of the Rigi via Greppen, Weggis, Vitznau and Gersau to Brunnen-Ingenbohl and inspires along the way with secluded benches under shady mighty chestnut trees.

50. Egelsee

Less than an hour away from Zurich, you will find a well-hidden oasis of peace in the middle of the densely populated Limmat Valley. Since the Egelsee can only be reached on foot or by bike, there is usually still a free spot at the two bathing spots.

Back to map

51. Eglisau

Nestled between vineyards and the Rhine, the historic old town of Eglisau forms a pretty backdrop. This is also where the ships of the Züri-Rhy shipping company dock and take passengers on a leisurely round trip on one of the most attractive stretches of the Rhine between Eglisau and Rüdlingen. A wonderfully relaxing pastime.

Back to map

52. Regensberg

Sometimes, as a Zurich resident, you forget all the exciting sights that are worth a trip not far from Zurich. This also includes Regensberg Castle on the eastern Lägeren ridge. Once upon a time, feudal lords ruled here. Today, Regensberg is the starting point for a surprisingly adventurous hike over the Lägerengrat.

Back to map

53. Schauenberg

If the visibility is good, it’s worth taking an after-work trip to the Schauenberg in the Zurich Oberland. Up here, you can enjoy a 360° panoramic view of the canton of Zurich and the Alps. The second stage of the Züri Oberland High Trail, which starts in Girenbad and ends in Hulftegg after a hearty 21 kilometres, also passes by the viewpoint.

54. Sihlwald

In 2000, forest use in the Sihl Forest not far from Zurich was discontinued. Nine years later, the Federal Office for the Environment officially declared the Sihlwald a nature adventure park of national importance. Since the use of the forest has been discontinued, the forest has been left to its own devices again. If you walk along the signposted paths, you will discover old giant trees entwined with ivy, young shoots that fight for every spark of light and dead wood lying around as a habitat for beetles and fungi; a piece of wilderness and less than 20 minutes by train from the city center of Zurich. If you want to hike across the Sihlwald and don’t want to miss a vantage point, it’s best to follow the Sihlwald Wilderness Trail.

55. Calfeisental

A trip to the southernmost tip of the canton of St. Gallen requires a minimum of planning – at least if you travel by public transport. The narrow high valley branches off at Vättis, follows the Tamina uphill and leads up to Piz Sardona. A highlight is the hamlet of St. Martin, which was once a year-round inhabited Walser settlement. Today, day-trippers are spoiled with down-to-earth local cuisine in the Sankt Martin restaurant.

56. Fählensee

Unfortunately definitely no longer an insider tip, but the fjord-like Fählensee took my heart by storm four years ago and the night at the Bollenwees mountain inn on the shore of the lake is still one of my most beautiful mountain experiences.

Back to map

57. High Box

The cable car climbs almost 900 metres in altitude from the valley station in Brülisau to the summit of the Hoher Kasten. It takes a good 2.5 hours on foot – which is worth it in my opinion. After this effort, the hearty Appenzeller Chäshörnli in the revolving restaurant on the summit have been well deserved. On the subsequent hike along the geological hiking trail towards Saxerlücke, there are plenty of opportunities to study the unique panorama over the Alpstein area and the Rhine Valley in detail.

Back to map

58. Ittingen Charterhouse

The Ittingen Charterhouse, a former Carthusian monastery, is one of the most important cultural monuments in the canton of Thurgau. Today, the monastery complex is a seminar and conference centre and houses two important cultural institutions, the Ittinger Museum and the Kunstmuseum Thurgau. On a trip here, you should definitely reserve a table in the restaurant. For the majority of the dishes, the products from the in-house estate with cheese dairy, butcher’s shop, bakery, gardening and fish farm are used.

59. Napoleon Tower Hohenrain Wäldi

In 1829, on the initiative of Louis Napoleon, who was only 10 years old, the 21 m high observation tower “Belvédère zu Hohenrain” was built. A project group took this story as an opportunity to build a new tower based on the historic tower (which was demolished in the 19th century). The Napoleon Tower Hohenrain Wäldi was completed in spring 2017. The excursion to the observation tower can be combined with a bike tour and is a must for all those who want to enjoy a panoramic view over the Untersee, Constance, Kreuzlingen and the Alpstein.

60. Borders

The Randen is a lovely range of hills that stretches across the canton of Schaffhausen to Baden-Württemberg and is part of the Schaffhausen Regional Nature Park. With the Schleitheimer Randenturm, there is also the opportunity to take a bird’s eye view of the landscape. And best of all, hardly anyone gets lost here.

Back to map

61. Rhine Falls

In contrast to Randen, the Rhine Falls belongs on the bucket list of many tourists. Justly! This is particularly spectacular after rainy days. If you head towards the Rhine Falls, combine the excursion with a stroll through the old town of Schaffhausen or a visit to the pretty town of Stein am Rhein.

62. Sardona World Heritage Trail

In 2008, the Sardona tectonic arena with the Glarus main thrust was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Nowhere else in the world are the processes and traces of mountain formation as clearly visible as here. The Sardona World Heritage Trail, which leads in a total of six stages from Filzbach in the canton of Glarus to Flims in the canton of Graubünden, is also dedicated to this exciting topic. If six stages in one fell swoop are too much for you, you can also tackle individual stages as day tours. I find the first stage from Filzbach via Talapsee to the Murg lakes very appealing.

Back to map

63. Murgseen

Another worthwhile hiking classic in Glarus is the Murgsee circular tour, which is 15 kilometres long and requires a basic level of fitness with a length of almost 1,000 metres in altitude. If you don’t shy away from the effort, you will be delighted with magnificent mountain panoramas.

64. Spear

The highest Nagelfluh mountain in Europe can be climbed either via the Toggenburg High Trail or, with a little thrill, via ferrata (from Wengi). Either way, the spear is not only interesting from a geological perspective, but also inspires with its distant view. Eagle eyes may even spot Zurich’s Primetower. On the way back to the valley, I recommend a refreshment stop at the rustic Alp Oberchäseren. You may be staying here a little longer.

65. Day Trip Switzerland – St. Gallen

St. Gallen is an incredibly multifaceted city. On the one hand, there is the sublime abbey district with its cathedral and abbey library, which houses real treasures among its more than 170,000 documents. And on the other hand, there is the city lounge designed by Pipilotti Rist in cool red. Also worth seeing are the Textile Museum and the Kunsthalle with its international appeal. Gourmets should also not miss the Einstein Gourmet, which has been awarded two Michelin stars and 17 Gault Millau points.

66. Taminaschlucht

An outdoor excursion destination that also works in rainy weather is the Tamina Gorge in Bad Ragaz. Here in the narrow gorge, where the rock walls almost touch each other and thus protect themselves from the rain, the 36.5° warm thermal water springs up. If you are slightly shivering after a walk from the Alter Bad Pfäfers to the gorge and back, it is best to warm up afterwards directly in the Tamina Therme in Bad Ragaz.

67. Wildhouse

Nestled between Säntis and Churfirsten, Wildhaus is the starting point for a wide range of summer activities. Whether it’s a family hike on the Klangweg, a multi-day tour on the Toggenburg High Trail or simply a leisurely Sunday afternoon at the Schwendisee – you’ll be spoilt for choice.

My top excursion destinations in Graubünden

68. Crestasee

It is well hidden in the middle of the Flims Forest and is a real gem, especially in the early morning hours and just before dark. Either you walk from the nearest post bus stop (Flims Dorf, Auas Sparsas) directly to Lake Cresta, or you combine the excursion with a hike through the Flims Forest including a detour to the viewing platform Il Spir high above the Rhine Gorge Ruinaulta.

69. Monstein

In my opinion, the world’s best blueberry cake is served in the Veltlinerstübli restaurant in the delightful Walser village of Monstein near Davos. Just the right excursion destination for a culinary flight of fancy in the Graubünden mountains.

70. Viamala Gorge

The Viamala Gorge in the Beverin Nature Park is an imposing natural monument. The visitor centre, where 359 steps lead down into the depths of the gorge, is located not far from Thusis. If you are not afraid of water, you can experience the Viamala Gorge swimming and sliding as part of an easy canyoning tour.

Back to map

71. Safiental

Also part of the more than 400 km2 Beverin Nature Park is the Safiental with its unique natural and cultural landscape, which is shaped by the settlement of the Walser people. If you like to walk, it’s best to follow the 16-kilometre-long Walser Trail from Versam to Tenna. As a stage stop, I recommend the charming Nühus in Safien.

72. Swiss National Park

The Swiss National Park in the Engadine has existed for over 100 years, making it the oldest national park in the Alps. The 170km2 protected area is a true hiking Eldorado, which is suitable for day trips as well as multi-day hikes. A classic that can be combined with an overnight stay in the only managed mountain hut in the National Park is the sixth stage of the National Park Panorama Trail from Zernez to Vallun Chafuol. Also worthwhile is the detour to the national park exclave “Lais da Macun“. The altitude difference (1,600 in total) can be reduced to a tolerable level for a day tour with a call-a-taxi from Zernez.

73. Segnesboden

If you follow the cheerfully bubbling Flem mountain stream uphill from Flims for a good 1,000 metres in altitude, you will reach the Segnesboden after about 3.5 hours and quickly forget the effort at the sight of the magnificent mountain scenery. Up here, you can enjoy an unobstructed view of the jagged peaks of the Tschingelhörner, which are part of the Sardona tectonic arena.

74. Throne

The painter Giovanni Segantini once described Soglio as the “threshold to paradise” and I think that describes the enchanting mountain village aptly. Soglio exudes a self-confident tranquility and is located on a privileged sun terrace high above the valley floor. The most beautiful view of Soglio is when approaching the village on the Via Panoramica Val Bregaglia from Maloja. If you want to relax after the mountain tour, you will certainly find a secluded spot in the garden of the hotel and restaurant Palazzo Salis – depending on the time of day, the garden is reserved exclusively for hotel guests.

75. Müstair

To date, Switzerland has a total of 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and one of them is located in the southeasternmost corner of Switzerland in the Münster Valley. The monastery of St. Johann is undisputedly the main attraction and visitor magnet. But if you travel to the Münstertal, you will quickly notice that there is much more to discover here. Be it a hike to Lai da Rims, a post bus ride on the Umbrail Pass, a visit to a historic mill or solving tricky puzzles around the Biosfera Val Müstair on the “Chatscha jaura” carving hunt; so plan enough time from the outset.

76. Val Sinestra

The wildly romantic Val Sinestra in the Lower Engadine is the perfect retreat for those seeking peace and quiet. My favourite place is an hour away from Vnà in an idyllic forest clearing. The Zuort farm once served as a customs station, but today it delights hikers and day-trippers with regional delicacies.

My top excursion destinations in Valais

77. Allalinhorn

Fancy a challenge? How about climbing a four-thousand-metre peak? In addition to the Breithorn in Zermatt, the 4,027 m high Allalinhorn in Saas Fee is one of the easiest four-thousand-metre peaks in the Alps. With a bit of luck in the weather and the accompaniment of a knowledgeable mountain guide, the summit ascent is possible in one day.

Back to map

78. Anenhütte

The hike from the Fafleralp to the Anenhütte at the foot of the Lang Glacier in the rear Lötschental is one of my favourite circular hikes. From sun-tanned granaries to beautiful mountain lakes and magnificent views to a well-deserved piece of cake at the Anenhütte, this route contains all the ingredients for a successful mountain tour.

Back to map

79. Binntal

The Binn Valley is not only known for its historic mule tracks from Valais to Italy, but also for its mineral resources. The first mineral discoveries were made by shepherds in the 18th century. Word got around and mineralogists soon followed, systematically examining the rock. Today, the Binn Valley is considered to be the most mineral-rich area in the Alps. So keep your eyes open when hiking – maybe you will discover one or the other precious stone on the strict but beautiful tour from Binn via Mässersee to Geisspfadsee.

Back to map

80. Brig

Brig is a transport hub for all those who travel by public transport to the Upper Valais or the Simplon area. But instead of always just changing trains, it’s worth planning a longer stopover for Brig. Not far from the train station is the old town with the Stockalper Castle, which is well worth seeing, which is closely connected to the former mule track over the Simplon.

Back to map

81. Crans-Montana

Without bisses, the dry southern slopes of Valais would hardly be usable for agriculture. The historic irrigation canals bring the precious mountain water to where it is needed. Many bisses are still in operation today and can be explored on parallel paths. A particularly adventurous bisse hike – the Bisse du Ro – leads from Crans-Montana to Lac de Tseuzier. Surefootedness is an advantage here.

Back to map

82. Derborence

Even the journey provides a thrill – the narrow mountain road that leads from Sion to Lac de Derborence hardly allows two passenger cars to cross at any point. So we can only hope that the Postbus doesn’t drive down the valley now of all times. Once the journey is over, a mountain lake in front of a beautiful backdrop and a unique flora await you. In addition to a short circular hike around the lake, the Lac de Derborence is also the starting point for high mountain tours in the direction of Ovronnaz or the Sanetsch Pass.

Back to map

83. Earth Pyramids of Euseigne

At the entrance to the Val d’Hérens, a curious geological structure awaits visitors. The main road passes directly under the so-called earth pyramids, which were formed at the end of the last ice age. A worthwhile stopover on the way to Arolla or as a detour on the way to Sion.

Back to map

84. Fiescheralp

When I see the Great Aletsch Glacier in all its glory in front of me, I feel incredibly small and at the same time the thought of the ice masses groaning under the summer heat pains me. Nevertheless, a hike along the Aletsch Panorama Trail reveals the most beautiful views of the natural wonder and offers numerous beautiful motifs for souvenir photos at Lake Märjelensee not far from Fiescheralp.

Back to map

85. Grimentz

If I could award the title of the most beautiful mountain village in Valais, it would be Grimentz in the Val d’Anniviers as the winner. The car-free, narrow main street, where the geraniums on the window sills of the dark wooden façades shine in competition, is simply picturesque. From here, it takes less than half an hour by post bus up to Lac de Moiry, which is also worth seeing.

Back to map

86. Portes du Soleil

The cross-border winter sports area of Portes du Soleil is transformed into a biking paradise in the summer months. 19 lifts provide access to over 600 kilometres of cross-country, enduro and downhill routes with just one lift pass. Here you can really let off steam. While you always have the striking Dents du Midi in your field of vision while biking, there is the possibility to walk around them on the 42.5-kilometer Tour du Dents du Midi.

Back to map

87. Riederalp

While the Aletsch Panorama Trail between Riederalp and Fiescheralp scores primarily with the view, it also includes thrills on the Riederalp – Bettmeralp route. After a march through the protected Aletsch Forest, some of which are more than a hundred years old, a rickety suspension bridge high above the Massa Gorge at the end of the Aletsch Glacier leads to the opposite side of the valley.

Back to map

88. Black Lake

If you want to escape the summer heat in the valley, you will find the longed-for cooling off on the high-altitude trail from the Lauchernalp to the Fafleralp. The special refreshment kick is the jump into the Schwarzsee, which is located not far from the Fafleralp directly on the high trail. Hiking and swimming make you hungry, so I recommend combining this excursion with a stop at the restaurant of the Hotel Nest- und Bietschhorn. The restaurant has been awarded 15 Gault Millau points as well as the Bib Gourmand and is guaranteed to serve you something fine.

89. Visperterminen

A destination for wine lovers is Visperterminen; This is Europe’s highest vineyard, where, among other things, a fruity-sweet Heida thrives. In the St. Jodern winery in the hamlet of Unterstalden, there is the opportunity to taste the various local wines and take home a drop or two.

Back to map

90. Zermatt

Admittedly, Zermatt is no stranger. But it should not be missing from my 99 top excursion destinations, because the combination of impressive mountains and exquisite cuisine does not take place anywhere else in such symbiosis. If you don’t believe me, just go on the 5-lake hike and then stop at Chez Vrony… I bet you’ll rave about it too.

My top excursion destinations in Ticino

91. The Castles of Bellinzona

Since the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, Bellinzona is only a stone’s throw away from Zurich. Every Saturday, a large weekly market takes place in the old town of Bellinzona. A visit to the market can be easily combined with a detour to Castelgrande Castle. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Castles of Bellinzona” and offers a beautiful panoramic view of the city.

92. Cardada Cimetta
