I found it—the perfect haven for relaxation for young and old alike. The 5-star family hotel Das Paradies in Latsch captivates with its familial atmosphere and offers the perfect package for nearly any vacation wish. Nestled among the idyllic apple orchards of the Vinschgau region, it’s an ideal place to unwind. At the same time, the surrounding area offers much to explore. I’m sharing my personal highlights in the following lines.
Welcome to Hotel Das Paradies Latsch
For this weekend getaway, the journey is more than just a means to an end: Das Paradies can be reached from Switzerland via one of the most scenic Alpine passes—the Ofen Pass—either conveniently by public transport or by car. Along the way, the stunning backdrop of the Swiss National Park ensures a varied travel experience. Excited about the relaxing hours awaiting us in the 3,700 m2 wellness world, we set off early and arrive in Latsch in the early afternoon.
“You must be hungry,” the concierge says after greeting us and promptly leads us to the restaurant. To our surprise, the half-board at Hotel Paradies includes not only breakfast and dinner but also a hearty afternoon snack, which we were able to enjoy as arriving guests. While we helped ourselves at the salad buffet, the check-in formalities were taken care of. I couldn’t imagine a better welcome. The attention to the needs of guests is one of the core values of the Pirhofer family, who have been managing the hotel for over 50 years, now in its third generation. More on this later.
Cozy Accommodations
First, we settle into our Premium Room, Poolside. Hotel Paradies has about 60 rooms—a manageable size. The variety, however, is impressive, ranging from simple double rooms and comfortable family rooms to luxurious penthouse suites with private whirlpools across 15 categories. All feature high-quality, timeless materials. Subtle tones and warm wood create a pleasantly calming atmosphere. The spacious balconies with comfortable loungers and views of the orchards and mountains are an absolute highlight.
The attention to details is evident here as well: a handwritten greeting card, fresh fruit, and delicious pralines await us—simply fantastic! The view from the window makes it clear where we’ll be spending the remaining sunny hours: relaxing on one of the cozy loungers by the pool.
Starting the Day in Paradise
The following days were less sunny, but that was no reason to despair. Instead, we took the opportunity to thoroughly enjoy the delicious breakfast buffet. Almost no wish goes unfulfilled here. From a juice bar to homemade spreads and delectable pastries, you’ll find everything your heart desires. And just look at this perfect cappuccino!
Heavenly Wellness
Next, we braved the cool autumn breeze in the wellness area, which spans multiple sections and includes both indoor and outdoor facilities. Surrounding the large indoor and outdoor pool is the “Family Spa.” In addition to incredibly comfortable loungers, there’s also a textile sauna and a baby pool. During the summer months, the garden waterslide adds some action. The pool is fantastic and perfect for an extensive morning swim.
Afterward, we visited the Adults Only Silence Spa Garden, an exclusive retreat reserved for adult guests. This tranquil oasis features two saunas, a steam bath, infrared loungers, a heated rooftop saltwater pool with panoramic views, a plunge pool, and plenty of space for relaxation. Daily experience infusions add an extra touch to the offerings.
A Delightful Evening
The culinary offerings at Das Paradies also exceeded our expectations. A highlight is the newly designed hotel bar in the lobby area, where we started the evening with drinks. The adjacent outdoor lounge is also beautifully designed, providing a relaxed atmosphere.
The restaurant area features cleverly designed niches, ensuring a private dining experience. Special attention is given to the diverse needs of different guest groups, including families with children, who benefit from special offers like early dinners in the kids’ club. The cuisine expertly combines traditional Vinschgau dishes with Mediterranean elements. Fans of antipasto buffets will also be delighted!
We were particularly impressed by the attentive and friendly service. If you’re interested in sampling a local wine (highly recommended!), the sommelier will provide excellent advice.
Activities in and Around Das Paradies
Despite the many amenities at Das Paradies, we couldn’t resist exploring the surrounding area. The hotel is located in the heart of the Latsch-Martelltal vacation region, making it the perfect base for numerous outdoor activities. The reception team is always happy to provide helpful excursion tips. Here are some personally tested outings I warmly recommend:
Hiking to Tarscher See
Our first excursion took us to the Tarscher Alm chairlift base station, just a 10-minute drive away. The ride up the steep slopes to Tarscher Alm takes about 20 minutes. From there, a well-marked hiking trail (Route No. 9) follows the edge of the slope to the idyllic Tarscher See, nestled in the forest. Plan about 45 to 60 minutes for the 2.1-kilometer route. You can either return via the same path to the chairlift station or take an alternative trail down to the valley station, which is steeper in parts but manageable for experienced hikers.
Exploring the Area by e-Bike
The Vinschgau region is a cycling paradise, famous for its exciting mountain bike trails and scenic road bike routes. Hotel Das Paradies is located near one of South Tyrol’s most popular cycling paths, the Via Claudia Augusta, which stretches from the Danube to the Adriatic. While we weren’t planning an epic ride, we took advantage of the opportunity to rent two e-mountain bikes from the hotel for half a day.
Following a marked bike trail, we climbed a winding gravel path up to the panoramic Latscher Alm. Along the way, we enjoyed breathtaking views of Vinschgau. At the top, we rewarded ourselves with a delicious apple strudel!
Exploring Martelltal
When asking the Pirhofer family for their favorite regional excursions, “Martelltal” inevitably comes up. Nestled in the Stelvio National Park, it’s one of the most beautiful side valleys of Vinschgau. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t in our favor, so we limited ourselves to a short walk around the Zufrittsee. The setting, however, was incredibly promising, and the hiking possibilities seem endless.
By the way: In winter, this area offers beautiful snowshoe and winter hiking trails.
Tasting Local Specialties
An activity that pleases the palate is the weekly wine tastings of local wineries. During our visit, we had the pleasure of meeting Thomas Plack from the Lehengut. Since 2006, he has been cultivating his orchards and vineyards exclusively organically. His Riesling wines are award-winning, but what’s even more fascinating are his experiments with fungus-resistant grape varieties. He introduced us to one such wine—a delightful Souvignier gris called “Gegenwind.”
At Hotel Das Paradies, it’s not just wine on the tasting menu—depending on the season, an apple tasting might also be featured!
